The animation, graphics, and combat in Bethesda games have been horribly outdated and quite frankly embarrassing for AAA-games since Morrowind. Everyone moves like a robot, the facial animations are terrible, every character looks wooden. The combat has no impact or satisfaction, melee combat feels like shit, everyone is a bullet sponge, gunplay is garbage.
Everyone I saw talk about FO4 said it was a huge leap in gameplay and they were right, they finally jumped from PS2-era to PS3. You may call that hyperbole but if anything it's generous. These games have some great writing and worlds but they are held back by utter incompetence in producing action-based games. Imagine if Skyrim had the combat of a game like God of War. Imagine in FO4 had the gunplay of a COD or Doom.
There is no excuse for this shitty engine surviving this long, and don't use the level of detail and world size as an excuse. RDR2 is one of the most detailed games with one of the biggest, most alive worlds I can remember, yet they still managed to squeeze in satisfying gunplay and impactful melee combat.
Bethesda is stuck in the past and while everyone has their pitchforks out for FO76 they need to keep them out to kill this shitty engine and bring some competent gameplay and graphics to help realize these amazing worlds and stories.
