Gaming Media And Why I Think Some People Are Losing Their Passion For Games

I have been playing games my entire life. I was born in 1998 which was right before games really exploded. I've had a lot of time to think about why some people stop playing games or lose their passion for them. Aside from just being too busy to play them, many people claim that games just aren't good any more and that may be true for some people, but there is one thing I feel has ruined games for many people too. Game media. There's nothing wrong with game media, but it can have some negative effects on people looking to play new games. Game knowledge wasn't very simple to obtain in the past. A significant portion of game knowledge came from word of mouth. You talked to your friends about the game and learned so much from those conversations. This is why there were so many "Secrets" floating around or myths where Jimmy said if you beat the whole game without beating damage you get a secret item and then you do it and nothing happens and you ignore Jimmy for like 30 minutes because you're upset.

My point in saying this is that there was so much unknown about the games we played. We were really on an adventure. We had no clue what was going to happen, and that made exploring those games very fun. Now information is very easy to come by. You can learn the ending of a game before you even touch it, sometimes by accident. Now like I said earlier, game media is not inherently bad, but some people do allow game media to ruin games for them. It doesn't always have to be an extreme example like I had above though. Nowadays there are so many game trailers, so many in game demonstrations. You actually do learn a lot about a game just by watching short clips. I understand that people do this often to figure out if they even WANT to buy a game or not, but when you read or watch a game to see if it looks interesting, you're really taking away one of the most important aspects of a videogame adventure. Discovery. The curious unknown. There are so many "Aha" moments in games that get taken away from you because you already saw it in a video. Even something as small as learning a new way to use your character can be entertaining. Those small bits of discovery are stripped away when people look up trailers or gameplay before getting a game. Over the last 2 or so years I have vowed not to watch a trailer or gameplay for a game until I have played it, and it has restored SO MUCH of that childlike wonder of really exploring a new world for the first time. It has really improved my passion for games, and I seriously recommend everyone to at least give it a try. Who knows, it may have a huge impact on your enjoyment too.
