I originally typed out what was basically a hate-post for the switch, but I didn’t feel like trashing it for no reason, so I composed my thoughts and decided to orderly explain what my big issues are with the switch and was hoping to have a solid discussion on whether or not other agree or disagree. I don’t want this to be people yelling at me that the switch is awesome and that I suck, thank you. Anyways…here are the points: 1) Creativity 2) Game Library 3) Originality
CREATIVITY: I feel like the switch is..bland? It’s not terrible, but it’s not great either. I never put my switch in tv mode, it’s always in my hands when I’m playing. If I wanted a giant console that fit in my hands I’d just get one of those large 3DS XL’s or something. I don’t hate the idea of the controllers being able to disconnect from console, but after a while they begin to show from wear and tear as the controllers start to almost “rattle” around in their tiny sockets, meaning that I need to go out and buy another pair of those expensive things. Along with this, drift is a huge issue with the controllers that I don’t need to explain since many people complain about it. Other than what’s on the outside of the console, what’s on the inside doesn’t impress me either. There are no backgrounds, no music, the menu screen is extremely bare bones and just minimalistic squares and circles that hasn’t improved in the three or so years the switch has been out. Whether it be interior or exterior, I am not impressed with the creativity behind the consoles appearance, controllers, usage, anything. But before I keep dwelling on this, I should talk about the games…
GAME LIBRARY: To say there are not many games on the switch would be an understatement. Sure, there are plenty of good games…if you feel like paying a subscription to play the great, nostalgic classics. Now, to be fair, Nintendo’s online subscription is MUCH cheaper that other consoles, but it’s still not good. I’m not saying I expect it to be free, but at the same time this shouldn’t be the answer either. Other than these classic games for a fee, there are some decent originals for the switch. I have played barely ANY games for the switch that I genuinely get joy out of. Most of the switch games I’ve played were only played for about 2-3 hours before I was like “Yeah, I might as well play the 3DS version of this game”. There are only three games in the entire library of games that I liked: Pokemon:Shield, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX, and Animal Crossing:New Horizons. Other games were okay, but not great. I understand that the switch has only been out for three years, but at the same time..the switch has been out for three years! There should be more than three games that I like in this thing!
ORIGINALITY: This may fall in a little with creativity, but it should hopefully only be a bit. I believe the idea of the switch being able to be portable and a console is…meh? I’m sorry, but it doesn’t have the same “oomph” that it did the first time with the Wii U. I find it insane that people act like the switch did it first. It’s like the Back to the Future meme where he’s like “What do you mean? It’s brand new!” Like come on..the Wii U gamepad was basically a switch just without its sides cut off, and I liked the appearance and presentation of the Wii U way, way, way more than the switch. People can mock the Wii U as much as they’d like, but at least it has character. The switch just feels soulless. I remember when Nintendo was bursting with creativity and originality with each console they produced. I don’t try to sound like a hipster who only likes old stuff, but the Wii and 3DS were the prime of this company, in my opinion. Overall, comparing those two titans of consoles to the Switch is like comparing a show dog to a mutt. Like, the mutt is still a dog, and you love dogs, but obviously the show dog is better.
I want to make it very crystal clear that I am NOT here to fight, argue, or get yelled at. I am simply here to see if anyone else shares my opinion. If you want to voice your opinion on the matter, I’d be happy to hear why you agree/disagree with me! Anyway, have a great day and thank you for reading this! :)
