I, like many people here, am pretty disappointed with 2020 in terms of Nintendo news (among many other reasons). Aside from Animal Crossing and its subsequent updates, the Pokemon DLC, and Min Min getting confirmed for Smash, there hasn't really been much to really get me SUPER excited (with a few exceptions).
But I think we are coming around the bend here. Paper Mario getting stealth dropped was a big indicator for me that, although COVID-19 has delayed much in the gaming industry (with Nintendo being no exception), we should expect big things from Nintendo in late 2020/2021. Think about it: a beloved franchise like Paper Mario getting mentioned just a few a weeks before the game's release? Seems rather unprecedented, given how little else we've had going on. Sure, there are the Indie Directs and Partner Showcases (which are super cool, don't get me wrong! Definitely some great action going on there), but to me, these seem like Nintendo getting all of their smaller stuff out of the way to clear the landing pad for the BIG Direct, you know what I mean?
What do I mean specifically? Well, given the fact that we have a Breath of the Wild sequel on the horizon at some point, I think it's safe to say we will see an announcement of a release date sometime before the end of the year; the game is more than likely pretty far into development at this point.
And this isn't an "I have an uncle who works at Nintendo" thing; I'm not necessarily predicting any of these things for any reason other than I am an overly hyped fan who loves to talk about what COULD be happening behind the scenes.
Metroid Prime Trilogy port? I would say, given how much the fans have been asking for it, it's possible it's coming to the Switch next year, if not maybe a release date for it, and maybe a teaser for Metroid Prime 4.
Some other things I'd love to hear from Nintendo about whenever the BIG Direct comes? Bayonetta 3, for sure. I was IN LOVE with the first game, and will be playing the second one very soon. I don't think we've heard much about it other than the fact that it exists. Bayonetta sure is a popular Smash character though, and I'm sure Platinum as well as Nintendo are itching to cash in on that.
This rumored Super Mario package also intrigues me. We know that Mario and Zelda's 35th anniversaries are coming up, and it would be amazing to see something go along with these. People have also been speculating about a Skyward Sword port since the launch of the Switch, and I would give an arm and a leg for that, seeing as how it's one of the few Zeldas I still haven't played.
I could also see them announcing some kind of installment in the Donkey Kong series, seeing how well Tropical Freeze did, however there isn't a lot of evidence for this, just me throwing ideas out there.
Nintendo is going to have the one-two punch of the PS5 and the Xbox Series X coming at them next fiscal year, and if I know anything about Nintendo, they'll have some major things to throw out in these next ~6 months to offset that.
Do I think all of these things are coming out/getting announced within the next year? No. Do I think a few of them are likely? Sure. Am I PARCHED for ANY Nintendo news? You bet your ass I am.
