Posted this in another sub, no opinions. I'll just leave it right here, then:
I've recently read a bunch of recommendations for/glorious gaming memories about Senua's Sacrifice and not a single one made it sound as if the game wasn't just about to drive you round the bend with every single level! I felt like some severely mentally challenged ork reading all these stories that made it sound like everyone else just breezes through this hellish mixture of despair, confusion and helplessness.
Now don't get me wrong, I had read a lot about the game and was really excited for it and when it was lowered in price, I made my move – and quickly questioned my entire 35 years of gaming experience. My first peek into a walkthrough was already mandatory when you have to find the runes in your environment, because after what felt like ages, I had finally found all but one – I was trying every inch of the level from every possible angle and you could almost hear the madness starting to boil in my brain, so I had no choice and I usually soldier on without looking stuff up,, but it was just not happening!
To be honest, the only level afterwards that I was able to solve by myself was the one with the hut by the sea, where you have to light torches in a certain order. Right now I'm as stuck as never before at some flooded buildings where a bridge has collapsed and I can investigate every single inch of that goddarn mother of a level, I can't even get a handle on how to even start solving that one and ever since I reached that giant tree and can choose my own sequence in which to complete the levels, I can't for the life of me find the level I'm stuck at in any walkthrough anymore. It's absolutely hopeless.
The graphics? Amazing. The level of detail, the facial expressions, the levels, it's right up there with the best of 'em. The battle system? I loved every minute of it! Stripped down and intuitive, yet doesn't feel like you earn a victory all that easy. The whole vibe ,the voices, the fx. Brilliant, nothing less. But it must've been in the age of 8-bit home computers that I got so frustrated with a game and wouldn't touch it for weeks, even months, then reading about it again and giving it yet another try just to end up even more fed up than before and permanently being at your wits end with every corner you turn!
But no one else mentions all of that EVER, not getting stuck, no walkthroughs involved, no frustration, nothing, and either I have evolved backwards coincidentally every time I fired up this game or a lot of people are not entirely honest about their relationship with it and I'm not even sure which one it is at this point. I'm just so done with how unplayable it is to me after looking forward to it for so long, how it just won't allow the least bit of a nice flow without throwing overly complicated problems at ya.
I can't be the only moron out here…
