One thing that tends to turn people off from OldSchool Runescape, it how Oldschool it feels. (I know this is contradictory but its the truth.)
Now as i understand where people are coming from, i believe its because there is a HUGE part that they are missing when they either start out, or are a returning player after not playing for years. Its a part that roughly 80-90% of the existing community knows and uses, but usually 0% of new or returning players know about.
This missing piece: RuneLite.
What is RuneLite?
RuneLite is a 3rd party client that has built in add-ons that make the game MUCH more enjoyable. Due to Jagex (OSRS Parent Company) never updating their own client, a community built client was made to give OSRS a much more modern feel that fits perfect with its OldSchool feel.
What are these add-ons? (Some examples but theres a ton)
Animation Smoothing: As it says, it smooths the ALL the animations of the game. Makes it feel less brick like.
Item Names / Cost at the Grand Exchange: When you kill a monster and an item drops on the ground (Or you randomly see any item on the ground), it will tell you the name of that item and how much it cost at the grand exchange without having to pick it up. It also COLOR CODES items based on worth automatically.
Experience Tracker: A way to track how much exp youre getting in any given stat as well as how much exp per hour.
A Wiki Button: By far one of the most useful tools in this. OSRS Wiki is the most complete wiki of any mmo ive ever seen. It has everything from drop rates of items, to max hits of a monster, to everything an item can be used for, quest guides etc.
How it works:
- Click the Wiki Button.
- Click litterally anything in the game (even a bush or tree if you really want)
- It will open your browser to that wiki page.
Does Jagex allow 3rd party clients?
Yes, Jagex does allow for 3rd party clients. That being said, they do not allow every add-on as some could be cheating or bot like. RuneLite fully complies with Jagex rules and every add-on on RuneLite has been approved, thats why 80%+ of the community uses it.
The client provides so many Quality of Life updates that Jagex refuses to make with their own client that i can see why new players would be turned off when they first start playing it.
If youre interested in using RuneLite just go to google and type in "RuneLite Download", it will be the first link (not sure if i can just post a link straight to it)
The point of this post was to inform users that don't know but OSRS is honestly shit without this client.
