Revival of the Realistic Voxel MMORPG

Gamingtodaynews1e - Revival of the Realistic Voxel MMORPG

I played Minecraft on and off since beta (For about 8 years) and while I really enjoyed playing it, in the last few years I felt like it was missing something. Realistic processes.

From punching trees for wood to punching sheep for wool, Minecraft was always more of a fantasy game that offered a relatively quickly way to gain satisfaction. And although, for those who love realism, Minecraft fell short, there was not much choice, as the Voxel style of games was still relatively new.

Fast forward 8 years later, and a vast variety of Minecraft spinoffs have hitting the shelves for a while. They address many different kinds of play styles, from adventure (Hytale, Terasology, Creativerse ) to scifi factories (Fortresscraft). Yet the genre of Realistic Voxel MMORPG seemed relatively untouched.

And then game TerraFirmaCraft. https://terrafirmacraft.com/ TFC was a Minecraft mod that finally offered those who were craving a rich realistic experience in a Voxel world what they craved. From panning for and smelting your first ore, pouring and smithing your first ingot into an actual tool, to managing weather and soil levels in order to grow food, TFC was able to deliver a variety of rich experiences that required knowledge of multiple systems in order to gain satisfaction. However, TFC was just a mod — an impressive one at that — but still a mod, for an aging game, written in Java (it was slow).

I enjoyed playing TFC for as long as I could, until a combination of bad luck where my computer stopped performing well and the donation-funded TFC development entered a lull.

For a while, I completely forgot about the genre that had so endeared and fascinated me. Work took over, and it was only recently that I managed to resume my search for a decent game. I wasn't particularly looking for a Realistic Voxel MMORPG. Because I had given up on finding anything new in that genre. I figured that the genre was too niche for anyone to even try.

But then I saw it: A brand new Realistic Voxel MMORPG game being developed by a small group of indie developers (including an Ex-Hytale developer) with no third parties involved and a direct line to the community via discord. At first I figured it would be dead already, because of how niche it felt like this genre was. But it wasn't. Sure. The server only had 5 users, and the game was not near completion. But it already had the trappings of the Realistic Voxel genre that I know and love: Realistic systems for converting flint into tools and clay into pottery, satisfying mining and smithing mechanics, cooking, food decay, soil mineral management, and more.

If the previous paragraph caused your eyes to glaze over, then the Realistic Voxel MMORPG may very well not be for you. But if the idea of discovering new, complex, yet oddly satisfying mechanics for every item you discover in game lights your eyes with excitement, then you should be glad to know that I share your excitement and that this genre is not dead.

For those who are interested, the realistic Voxel MMORPG which I am playing currently is called Vintage Story https://www.vintagestory.at/. I'm loving it so far as the devs are really responsive and the community if full of friendly people.

What do you think of this relatively new kind of game? Could you see yourself investing so much time to learn and explore intricate systems in order to receive the satisfaction that comes with mastering such systems? And what other games do you think come close to fitting the description I provided above?
