This is mostly a reaction to a film that I just watched that is called the Bourne Legacy which is a side story on the Bourne franchise. The main character is not seen in the film but his actions are felt from a distance and we get to see the actions and the reactions of those who were affected by his actions.
It is not only that some characters are already well known and their repeated exposure make them actually larger than life characters, but even hearing about their actions or stating their names and what they have done give a certain whisper that they are also larger than life too.
And in these stories, we get to see how other characters are affected by the actions of people who are well known.
I mean, imagine a story about the common Gotham citizen where they think that Batman is a superstition. It actually makes the character more iconic, especially when it is not told from the eyes of the main characters or well known protagonists.
It is similar to how comic book universes are expanding their universes with less well-known characters and we get to see the main characters from the headlines and we get to see how their actions affect others.
And in video games, I think that this should also be a good idea too because I think that whenever franchises are expanded via sequels and reboots and so on, we often delve into stories that are from the eyes of famous protagonists that we have already seen countless times
Like for example, Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep was a different take on the Kingdom Hearts formula especially when the secret movie in Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix was a completely different scene from what we were familiar with in the KH lore and we got to see the world in the eyes of actual Keyblade masters or how their actions eventually affected the protagonists later on.
Or I remember when I saw Resident Evil 7 which was completely different from the Resident Evil that I knew. It was very intimate than a large epic-scale apocalypse and the characters were brand new and the other well-known characters were revealed at the very end.
Other ideas come to mind like Metal Gear Solid 2, Halo Reach, and Devil May Cry 4.
Like for example, imagine a story about the average soldier in the Terminator franchise who gets to see John Connor or help him but is only briefly mentioned and maybe this person helped Connor in his mission to send Kyle Reese or a Terminator back in time. I think that lots of franchises are expanded by using familiar faces to capitalise on the familiarity but if we make the main characters only briefly mentioned and give the impression that their names have affected on the world around them, that would really have an effect on audience's perspective of the world as well
