There are games where I have many hours logged but no matter how much I play, it is as though my skills did not improve or are improving at a much slower pace than I expected, especially knowing that I am an adult gamer with limited time to play and there are also many options to play as well.

A lot of video games have this competitive edge in their design philosophy where they engage meta-play, creativity, strategy, critical thinking, multiple builds and so on.

Four games come to mind right now – Starcraft 2, Civilisation 5, Tekken 7 and XCOM 2

Now before you say that it is obvious that I mentioned these games because two of them are actually played in eSports where athletes do hours and years of training and these games are designed to be hard, even in the singleplayer.

Yet I am very attracted to these games and want to try and try and try again.

Some days, it feels as though I managed to progress.

But there are many days where I feel that I am stuck or not progressing any further.

Sometimes even certain genres give me that feeling like the RTS genre which I absolutely love, or the shooter genre like Rainbow Six or CS:GO.

Obviously, these games appeal to both casual or ranked so you are not obligated to take them seriously, and require a lot of training to get used to the mechanics and the meta.

But it is as though no matter how much I train or how many videos and tutorials I see to improve my skills (with the limited time that I have as I am also an adult with other responsibilities).

I often do at least a couple of hours each day or each other day to play, knowing that when I play one game over and over again, I might miss out on the skills of another game, or the meta keeps changing many times that you have to find a means to keep up with everything, let alone finding time to play your favourite games (especially if you have a large library or you have games which are constantly being updated and tweaked).

And this is where I end up in a crossroad between taking the game seriously and be focused as possible, like when I was younger and had more time to play, or be discouraged because of the lack of skill which also puts me in a crossroad because this limits the level of fun that I am experiencing while playing but at the same time, the grind is also the fun part because you are working for it.

This eventually becomes a bit of a puzzle when it comes to playing these games – whether you want to play or not, why you want to play it and how.

Knowing that there are many factors that you constantly evolving in many gaming communities nowadays and me, having many games that appeal to me, whether singleplayer or multiplayer and also have other responsibilities and priorities other than gaming, to actually find the game to play and also feeling like the effort that you put while playing was a well-earned task is a very rare thing.
