People calling it a "microtransaction haven" are WAY over-exaggerating. You can buy two things: easy fatality tokens and Time Krystals. Time Krystals can only be used in a store front with like 6 items that takes a long time to update (up to 24 hours, based on when I looked). To be honest, they're barely worth anything, IMO. The post on the front page right now that says all the skins together cost $6k+ to get is technically correct, but it makes it sound like you can actually spend all that money at once, which you can't and shouldn't; like I said, Time Krystals ain't shit.
A big misconception I keep seeing is that the consumables that make the super hard towers reasonable can be bought.
THEY CANNOT BE BOUGHT.
You can't buy any Gear augments, you can't buy Consumables, you can't buy ANYTHING except for what I mentioned above. Well, there's the DLC pass, but that's not relevant here.
Why the game is so grindy is a mystery. None of the currency you can use to unlock things in the Krypt can be purchased, and they've just done a stream where they've said they never will be. And I believe them. Injustice 2's lootbox system was PRIME microtransaction bait and you couldn't spend ANYTHING on those (just color shaders, mostly).
Speaking of the stream they've just done, they're toning down the difficulty of the towers by a large margin and making it to where consumables aren't as necessary as they are now (and they're increasing currency gain). They've also elaborated on the "lootbox chests" in the Krypt. Apparently, every single chest in my Krypt contains the contents of the chests in everyone else's Krypts; the locations are just randomized. What I mean by that is that everyone gets the exact same loot from the Krypt, but the chests are all mixed up and don't have set locations like they did in MKX. None of them pull from pools of items.
I'm not particularly fond of the fact that the Krypt isn't the same for everyone since there's no longer any way of knowing where a specific thing is (though there are several special chests that contain the same contents for every player), but at the same time, I don't think the devs did this to squeeze more money out of us. Why? Because they haven't provided us with any ways to skip past it all by paying extra.
I realize this post has a high chance of being unpopular, but I really think MK11 is getting bashed for issues it doesn't have. I know it sounds crazy, but I don't think the grind is a result of greed. And it won't be as grindy anymore with these fixes they're implementing (at least, I hope so).
I have elected to trust NetherRealm Studios. Maybe this'll bite me in the ass, but I haven't regretted doing so in the past (see the Injustice 2 lootbox situation). I was really afraid to write this up because I knew I'd sound like a shill, but I think NRS deserves better. I wouldn't say that if they didn't deserve it (I still like Battlefront II, but I've never defended DICE).
