So I have not played the game but I watched a walkthrough of the game so I would like to point this out first.

From a first impressions perspective, I think I understood what the second game was portray – the consequences of revenge, hate and violence especially when set in a world where violence and survival is the rule of law.

I think I understood about the battles that Ellie was going through – sacrificing an oppurtunity for a safe and quiet life on the quest for revenge, and wanting to kill every single last person she encounters because Joel was the closest person she had as a father even though it was revealed that her relationship between the two was slowly starting to drift apart because she started to learn about the lie that he hid from her.

And I understood that they meant to portray from Abby's perspective.

At first, we wanted to hate Abby for killing Joel but afterwards, we started to see her perspective and also see her role in her own quest for revenge for the death of her father who was one of the people who was seeking to find a cure.

We saw her relationship with her friends and collagues and also her sense of mistrust with WLF and her duty to save Lev from the extremist Seraphites.

At the same time, we saw her battle against her own demons about whether or not she should accomplish her quest of revenge as she let Ellie run away at least twice, possibly out of empathy or fear of what she might become if she actually did she set out to do.

We also saw Ellie go through the same journey as well. She was her battling against PTSD and the sense of shame and guilt and anger for the loss of Joel and how she was slowly letting her anger take over like the torture scene or when she unknowingly killed a pregnant woman and expressed horror when she found out.

As also noticed this ingame – Ellie's movements were more quiet and stealthy but savage and lethal as though she wanted to murder the hell out of you; while Abby's movements felt brutal but more refined as though she has been training for years (and it showed because in the flashbacks, we saw her as more petite but slowly grew in size as though she has been training for this her whole life).

Perhaps the ending was the one that really struck a chord with me but also made me feel just as confused – Ellie has the oppurtunity to actually do what she set out to do but could not do it and let Abby go. It does not feel as though this reinforces the whole idea of the conflict of revenge and violence and the consequences of letting your actions being driven by revenge and violence.

In reality, I feel that the game, from a conceptual perspective, achieved what it wanted to portray – the whole concept of love but also hate but also the darker side of that, especially in the context of letting your actions be driven by love in a world where survival and violence is law.

This mimics with the theme of love and hate in the first game – we felt the heartbreaking scene of Joel and how his experience in the apocolypse were also mostly driven by his grief. He was heartbroken and vulnerable and it took him a long time to open up and become closer to Ellie and explains how Joel is neither a hero, nor a villian, especially the ending because no matter how much debates were made, it was no clear answer of whether Joel did was right or wrong.

Not even the claimed political agendas of transgender or LGBT people felt forced. The only person who was transgender was Lev and was driven about by a religiously fascist group.

Neither did the LGBT relationship of Ellie felt forced, especially the fact that we knew Ellie's sexuality in the first game
