Hi everyone, and for all those who celebrate, Merry Christmas! I recently got back into gaming during the pandemic after about a ten-year absence, and have been blown away by all the games that I've missed out on – especially the graphics and massive open-worlds that I would've thought impossible back when I used to play! My favorite games have been Breath of the Wild, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, and – especially – Grand Theft Auto Online. For the latter, I especially love it because of how interactive and casually chatty it can be – sure, it can be toxic at times, but I've actually met friends I have on Discord now by just saying "hi" in the general chat box. I also really like how we can end up just casually chatting about anything during freeplay – it's not like the chat only happens around specific objectives like during a heist.
That being said, I'm starting to run out of content in GTAO and want to branch out to an actual MMORPG, ideally an open world action-adventure one with a camera perspective behind the player character similar to my other two favorites, BOTW and AC Odyssey. I've been playing Guild Wars 2 based on its action-oriented combat (as opposed to tab-targeting), open world, aesthetics, and the consensus I've seen here that it's accessible for MMO newbies, and I've absolutely loved it – except it feels dead and lonely, more like a single-player game with other people running around than an actual social experience. For instance, sometimes I'll say "hi" in the general chatbox and 95% of the time, no one responds – and if they do, then they'll rarely have a sustained conversation with me. I've also gathered that people will communicate more during dungeons, but I really want something where people will just casually chat outside of any goal-oriented context.
Are there any MMOs similar to Guild Wars 2 that are casually chatty and social, kind of like what I've experienced from Grand Theft Auto Online? Although I prefer action-oriented combat that involves actual dodging as opposed to a combat system where you stand still pressing buttons while the stats determine everything, it isn't a deal-breaker for me if the most chatty options are tab-targeting. However, I really do want a camera set perspective behind the player (or even first-person) like GW2's action camera – I've taken a look at Albion Online and EVE Online but they're really not my thing.
Thank you so much!
Tl;dr Extroverted gamer loves GTAO for how people just casually chat outside of heists or missions, looking for similar MMO experience, tried GW2 and really liked the gameplay but felt lonely with the lack of casual conversation/difficulty starting conversations outside of dungeons
