I will highlight this with some context.
Perhaps I am being too dramatic here because I can relate a lot to this character named Roxas in Kingdom Hearts 2.
Roxas is strikingly different than Sora and there are hints that things are not what they appear.
This is especially the case that I was actually playing as him earlier and I heard the quiet music of Twilight Town and Roxas just simply being this quiet boy with some friends simply wanting to hang out and have fun.
But things are not as they seem and at times, he feels alone or strange.
I even felt this when the later stages of Twilight Town had no music at all and nobody was there and it was pretty quiet.
And later knowing that Roxas was not supposed to exist at all and was merely a "by-product" to something that has happened in a previous game and how he was toyed by the Organisation like a puppet and his purpose was to merge with Sora to give him back his memories and when his memories of Axel and Xion are nothing but empty shells, that was heart-breaking.
I am still playing through KH2.5 so I have not delved into the story that far but I am pretty sure that Roxas will get better in the long run based on my knowledge of the lore.
But learning of how he suddenly existed by accident and how he feels – that feeling felt close to home actually and I genuinely feel sorry for him.
And I actually felt this a lot when I played other video games, sometimes with video games that really pull your strings in your heart.
For example, in the Last of Us, I geniunely felt the sorrow, the desperation and the pity on Joel for having to endure and struggle the apocolypse for 20 years without anyone to be with.
Or in God of War (2019), I felt the power that Kratos has but at the same time, I also felt the fear and the guilt that he bears as well and the fear that this power will be in his son as well and may risk using it incorrectly.
Or in Bioshock, I felt the shock and uneasiness of being in Rapture and felt the shock when it was revealed to me that Jack is not really Jack. Or in Bioshock Infinite, Dewitt is a character of another Dewitt.
Or even in games where the characters are your own creations like in RPGs or the characters are silent so that you can see yourself as well like in Halo or Doom.
When you literally play these characters with your controller, you genuinely feel like you are the character.
And experiencing these feelings – whether it is power, anger, sorrow, fear, or uneasiness, there is as an eerie feel that the character that you play as feels more than just a character or a person with pixels.
He/she feels a lot like you or perhaps, he/she actually is you.
