In the game Lilith is the daughter of Mephisto, the mother of the Nephalem, the co-creator of Sanctuary and the Queen of the Succubi. The Eternal Conflict had raged for eons, and Lilith grew tired of the constant warring, and to make things even worse she disliked the leadership of her father and uncles – can't say they would win any medals for leader of the millennia. Bored of the monotony of it, Lilith decided to take an Angel as a prisoner; little did she know this was going to change her life forever. The Angel she took prisoner was as weary of the never-ending state of the Eternal Conflict and in his incoherent ramblings Lilith realised she could manipulate him for her on ends. In a story of Stockholm Syndrome that could rival that of Beauty and the Beast – the Angel Inarius was utterly besotted with Lilith. She convinced Inarius they needed to steal the Worldstone, then create a new world, hidden from the High Heavens and the Burning Hells……. and that's what they did. They stole the Worldstone, eloped and created a 'Sanctuary'.

At some unspecified time Lilith and Inarius had a son, and the union of Angel and Demon had never before occurred, the children were being unknown to the world. Lilith's son Linarian (Rathma) was the first of the Nephalem born in the new world of Sanctuary, and as with many of his generation, they were feared by their parents for two reasons

1) they were a danger to their parents due to their power being greater than their own

2) this power could draw the attention of the Angels and Demons beyond Sanctuary – as they would be abominations to both sides.

The renegade Angels and Demons came to a fork in the road, what should happen to the Nephalem, and two sides emerged. One side argued for the destruction of the Nephalem, while the other side argued their children should be spared; this was turning into a battle not unlike the Eternal Conflict. Lilith went spiralling into madness. In her own way she loved them – even if it was only because she saw the Nephalem as a way to put an end to the Eternal Conflict once and for all. In her madness Lilith transformed into a new and horrific form, allowing her hatred and malice to show physically; she then went on a killing spree that could rival all serial killers in history. She ruthlessly hunted and murdered her fellow renegades and those that agreed and followed Inarius. She was ruthless on her mission of destruction; and to make Inarius suffer. She let his see the havoc and carnage she'd wrought. What Lilith had done was unthinkable, but Inarius loved her and couldn't bring himself to kill her, so she was banished to the Void. In the end Inarius changed the Worldstone so that the Nephalem grew weaker and their lifespan shortened; from this the race of humanity was born,

During the ensuing Sin War Lilith found a way back into Sanctuary and altered the Worldstone so she could undo what Inarius had done to her progeny. Once she undid the weakening of the Nephalem she disguised herself as a noblewoman named Lyria; then allowing a man named Uldyssian to see her, she manipulated him for her own machinations. She tormented and manipulated Uldyssian, murdering members of the Temple of the Triune (the Burning Hells) and the Cathedral of Light (the High Heavens). Eventually it was revealed that Lyria was Lilith in disguise and openly mocked Uldyssian; informing him that the displays of power he had shown was in fact, her power. She gloated about killing people, ranting about the ignorance of humanity and how it came to be. She claimed that the power of the Nephalem would rise again, that SHE would rise to power once more backed by the Nephalem. Lilith and Uldyssian came to blows, he was overwhelmed easily, and the knowledge that he was essentially powerless or seen as a fraud. Uldyssian soon he found his own strength and power, a power that outmatched Lilith's. Inarius once again could not bring himself to kill his love, so once again… she was banished to the void; this time he made sure that the weakness that had allowed her to return was gone – which meant she couldn't return – in theory.

Lilith in Mythology

Lilith is a character that features in the mythology of various cultures; from Mesopotamia, to the Bible. Below I am going to cover the different roles she plays and how some characteristics can be seen in the more of Diablo… lets start where she is most famous.

Jewish Folklore

In certain Jewish literature Lilith is a very controversial figure and while she doesn't actually feature in the creation story of Genesis; however she does feature in several other texts. There is a plethora of Origin stories for Lilith, but the most common is where she is the first wife of Adam. According to the 'first wife' story, Lilith was created by God from the dust and clay of the Earth; once formed God placed Lilith in the Garden of Eden alongside Adam. Everything started out well…….. then the problems began to rise between Lilith and Adam. The friction always rose when Adam tried to exercise dominance over Lilith. The stories say that Lilith refused to "lay beneath" him during copulation. Lilith believed she was created equal with Adam; as they were made of the same dust and clay; to her as she was equal with Adam she would not lay under him. As you can guess this made Adam very unhappy, he believed he was her master; at this Lilith fled the Garden of Eden in order to feel freedom and independence. Adam was furious that she left, we went to God, telling what had happened; as a result God sent three Angels to retrieve Lilith. Eventually the Angels caught up with her, and when they did; they discovered she was pregnant. She refused to return with the Angels to the Garden of Eden. For the Angels this disobedience couldn't go unpunished, so they decreed that 100 of her children would die by their hand each day….. until she returned.

In revenge she's said to steal human children of their life and was believed to be responsible for stillbirths, infant and crib deaths. Although she stole the lives of children at night, she agreed not to kill children that wore an amulet that bore the name of one of the three angels sent to capture her. Once the angels returned to God's side, Lilith snuck into the Garden of Eden she discovered that Adam had a new wife – Eve. Furious she had sex with Adan and stole his 'seed' and with this seed she birthed earth-bound demons to replace the children the angels had murdered.

From Goddess to Succubus

Long ago Lilith was a Sumerian goddess of fertility and agriculture, but over the many centuries she became demonised by other cultures, transforming into a deadly seductress, she became the first of the succubi. The myths about Lilith span many centuries ranging from Ancient Sumeria to Jewish lore and mysticism, to the various tribes in Malaysia.

  • In Ancient Greece Lilith represented the Dark Moon – this is when there is NO moon visible in the sky.
  • In Ancient Greek mythology Lilith was known by the name Lamia – a child devouring demon.
  • In Mesopotamian mythology Lilith is a Fertility Goddess that protect women and children during labour and childbirth
  • In later Assyrian and Akkadian lore Lilith represents the branches of a tree.
  • In Babylonia Lilith was a dark spirit with a dangerous sexuality. She is believed to fertilise herself with a man's seed to create demons – a Succubus
  • In norther Europe Lilith represented Chaos and Wild Sexuality.

Queen of the Succubi

As a Succubus is a female demon that appears in men's dream,s, taking the form of a beautiful and irresistible woman. She would seduce the man in order to have sex with her and take his seed – just as Lilith did to Adam. Certain traditions believe that repeatedly having contact and sex with a Succubus or an Incubus (the male version of the Succubus) will cause deterioration of the physical and mental health. The depictions of a Succubus has changed over the millennia; from a demonic seductress to a beautiful and irresistible temptress. Lilith is the most famous and powerful Succubus, after leaving Eden and getting jiggy with the Archangel Samael.

Modern Day Worship and Beliefs

Lilith began life as a demon, a creature that crawls through the night stealing the life of children. However, today she represents the forces that are cast out in our society and cast out of ourselves. Lilith is a favourite goddess with women in modern times because of her independence, strength and fearlessness in the face of adversity. Lilith is a symbol of liberation, she guards and defends women during the birthing process. She is also a great power for women who have been abused, suffered injustice… especially if the abuse came at the hand of a man. For some Lilith is an avenger, a defender and a force to be reckoned with. She is a symbol for many modern feminist groups and due to the rise in education, understanding and women's rights (like the right to vote, to have a career) Lilith is an icon of how far women have come.

Conclusion and Thoughts

Lilith is a powerful figure in both the Diablo franchise and in the various world mythologies and folklore. Her fate of being banished from a place of 'safety' and the wild and chaotic revenge follows almost parallel. IN the game she is the daughter of a demon and the mother of a new race of beings. In mythology and folklore she was the first woman, independent and strong willed; after leaving the Garden of Eden she became the mother to many demons, and the first of the Succubi
