TL;DR: Played Diablo series forever. Had personal best achievement tonight and the game brings me and my brother closer.
Stay awhile and listen?
Now, look. I just turned 40 years old. I started playing Diablo – that’s Diablo 1 – when it first came out. We had two phone lines in our house, which was pretty f-ing cool in the mid to late 90s, so my older brother and I were actually able to play with each other from our separate computers. Given, of course, that our mother didn’t pick up the phone. It was magic.
Five years later, when I graduated from college, I only had a few weeks before I started law school. Luckily, that’s right when Diablo 2 came out. And. I. Played. The. Shit. Out. Of. It. Unfortunately, my lack of skill and planning kept me from ever advancing past I think level 78, as my Grizzly Bear Druid build proved… lacking.
When Diablo 3 came out, I was probably the most excited person in the world. However, early problems with loot soured it for me because I was deep in my career and didn’t have the hours and hours to put in. Later, when it came out for console, I got back into it. That’s how I game usually, so got it for my 360 and then my XBone. More recently, I bought it for my switch, as the thought of Diablo 3 WHEREVER YOU GO was just awesome to me. Along the way, I got my brother back into it.
The past is prologue. This season, we decided to both choose the same class and play “together.” We’re on different systems so we don’t actual play together, but we talk about it all the time and share funny stories and commiserate on strategy. We haven’t been super close recently since I have kids and he doesn’t, and it really brought us together.
This week, my wife is traveling for work for 10 days, so I decided to make a real push at night after kids are in bed. Most of my season journeys ended at like GR30, because I didn’t have the time to put in or the drive. Tonight, for the first time ever, I beat GR70. It’s an unbelievable feeling. Not only that, I beat it on my first try with 3 minutes to spare. (!!!)
Seeing that red line pop up and getting my first primal ancient – my first ancient at all – was incredible. I took a minute to think about how much joy this game has given me over the years.
Now, of course, I got The Ancient Bonesaber of Zumakalis, which is not, you know, ideal for my Archon Wizard rolling with a Chantodo set, but whatever. I’m so happy.
So, just thought I’d share that here. Love the game, love people who love it. Want more games in the future. Can’t wait to play with my kids.
