5 Major Tips for levels 5 and up (from a level 20)

fallout 4 - 5 Major Tips for levels 5 and up (from a level 20)

Hey Vault Dwellers,

Over the past day I've seen a lot of people doing questionable things (like storing power armor in their stash). I just want to put out 5 quick tips that have made my playing experience much more enjoyable.

  • Do not store power armor in your stash

Power armor is everywhere and spawn in the same 30 places in the game. Once you know where a few sets spawn there is absolutely no point in holding on to power armor. Its heavy as shit and you cant use it until high levels. Scrap it immediately. If you run into power armor in the wastes, take the helmet and fusion core only. Scrapping a power armor helmet provides a lot of rarer materials, whereas arms and legs just give you steel scrap.

  • Establish a camp early, grow these crops and make a water purifier

The crops you want to want to grow in your CAMP are corn, tatos, and Mutfruit. Why, you may ask? These (plus purified water) are the ingredients to make vegetable starch, which is 3 adhesive material. Adhesive is basically the backbone of everything you do, from repairing weapons and armor to creating new stuff. Once you are around level 15 it is imperative that you have a steady supply of it. The starch can be created at the cooking stove, under utility. It also grants experience when you make it… its great!

  • Scrap early and often on the go

Whenever you see a workbench in the wastes, scrap all of your junk. Some junk is extremely heavy while the mats it yields are very light. For example, a telephone has a weight of 5 but the mats it yields would weigh under .5. Often when I find a workbench in the wastes I will grab as much junk as I can in the area and then go back and scrap it all, which makes it ultra light. Dont forget to go through your stash, take out heavy junk, scrap it and put it back in. This can seriously cut down on the weight.

  • Always over-encumbered? Check your ammo and chems

Certain types of ammo and chems weigh a lot more than you would expect them to. Put anything that weighs 1 or over into your stash or sell it. Stuff like missles and fusion cores weigh you down a lot the more you collect. Now onto chems. The overabundance of chems in the world is understated, they are freaking everywhere. And just like the good character you are, you are picking them all up. While they may look light the sheer number of them in your inventory becomes a lot of weight (like potions in skyrim). Chems like super stimpaks weigh 1.5 a piece, if you have a few in your inventory it is weighing you down. Nuka-Colas (all the types) weigh 1 each. These chems are for high level stuff and you really dont need to have them in your inventory at the moment. Stash them. I would also stash or sell most of the chems in your inventory. Be honest with yourself, you rarely use them.

  • Check your map early and often. Do daily quests as soon as you get them

Checking the map periodically has gotten me to find government supply caches nearby and event with other people. Caches have a lot of great things in them and rewards and XP from events are a solid boost to your character. Daily quests give amazing rewards, and a lot of experience. They are only available for a certain time, and logging out or switching worlds will erase them from your questlog. Do them as soon as you get them! If you are in the middle of another quest it will be there forever, dailies are time sensitive.

So thats what I got for being successful in the wasteland. Here are some less important tips that should help you somewhat:

  • You may have an extreme overabundance of a certain mat in your stash (steel for example). You should cut down on this by creating something that you can sell (and get XP from crafting). A popular one for steel is throwing knives.

  • When fast traveling, if vault 76 or your camp is closer to the destination than you are, fast travel there first. Its free and will cut down on the caps you use to fast travel substantially.

  • Build your camp! its nice to have a little shack to call home. I have a 6×2 shack, with 6 turrets on the roof, that fits all the workbenches comfortably. I have a bed to get well rested and top off HP. Once I completed the final design I blueprinted it so I can instantly spawn it if I move areas. Try to build your camp in a remote area BUT near a town or city. Its incredibly useful to go run into the city for a scrap run and fast travel there for free. I had my 2 camps set up near Morgantown first then near Charleston.

If anyone in the comments has anything more to add, please post and I will add it here. Thanks for reading! Also open to any questions.

Read:  I am often asked about particular mods, and most recently someone asked for the whole mod list. This is that list, at the bottom I will list my PC specs and just above that I will list any issues I've encountered with my mods.

Edit:

  • Lock your stuff! you can lock doors and resource producers in your camp. Just go up to the object and you will see a button to lock it. Choose the highest level lock (dont worry, you can still access them just fine).

  • Making soups restores both hunger and thirst. cuts down on inventory and makes things easier.
