I’ve always been fond of workshopping ideas for video games. Even if I know they could never come to fruition, I enjoy thinking of them and showing them off to others. For example, this quest to replace Piper with a synth.
The quest would only be available after completing the main quest for the Institute. An Institute scientist would approach you, informing you of a “pet project” he’s been working on. (There isn’t anybody notable in robotics, so let’s say…Justin Ayo. He’s a real jerk.) He leads you to a Synth copy of Piper, and confides in his plan to replace her, by having you lead her away from Diamond City and having the Synth kill her. From there, the quest goes two different directions based on whether or not Piper hates you.
Player Not Hated By Piper:
The player can agree, upon which they carry out the plan and replace her with the Synth. Synth Piper will then be available as a companion, to replace normal Piper. She lacks an affinity system, but has better combat skills. You will receive 600+ EXP and 400 caps from Fake Piper as a reward.
You can also refuse, causing Ayo to become upset, but eventually accepting. At least, it seems that way. Next time you go to Diamond City, you’ll discover two Pipers having a stand-off outside Publick Occurances. You’ll have to ask questions to determine which one is real. Once one is dead, you have to inspect the corpse. If you chose right, you discover a synth component, and everyone is relieved. Talk to Piper to have a heartfelt conversation and receive your 600+ EXP. If you chose wrong…tearfully announce the lack of a synth component, hear Synth Piper express her frustration, watch Diamond City’s residents mow her down, and talk to Nat for a heart wrenching conversation and your 600+ EXP. Either way, you’ll get an unmarked quest to deal with Ayo (or whoever) similar to the end of A House Divided.
But also! You can still leave the conversation at any time, although people will get annoyed. If you so wish, you can get away, teleport to the Institute, get Synth Piper’s reset code from Ayo (with a yellow speech check) and determine the fake with certainty.
Player Is Hated By Piper:
The player will inform Ayo that Piper doesn’t trust them enough to follow them anywhere. He will be stumped for a moment, then turn to you for guidance. One can call off the operation (failing the quest) or have her perform a traditional replacement op.
If you do so, you will find Piper inspecting Fake Piper’s corpse and confirming that she was a synth to DC’s people. She rallies them up against the Institute before she notices you and gives you an angry speech. If Valentine is your companion, he will instantly leave and go to Piper’s side once it comes out that you tried to have her replaced. She will then give you an ultimatum: leave Diamond City forever, or everybody starts shooting. If you moves toward her or leave DC and come back, everybody in the town will be hostile.
After this route, quite a few things change. First, if Valentine wasn’t your companion during the ordeal, he will confront you about it. Unless you can succeed in convincing him you had nothing to do with the operation, he leaves permanently. Also, Goodneighbor guards and other randos will comment about how DC is letting in ghouls again, and that it’s Mayor is dead after some sort of coup. (And also, that he was a synth)
