So I've been a big fan of Fallout over the past year and I really enjoy 3, NV, 4 and 76(don't kill me). That said, I feel like I wouldn't be a fan if i never played the game that started it all. And thanks to Bethesda giving away the classics to those that had 76 last year, I decided to play FO1. I put it down for a month because I didn't know what I was doing but I got back into it for the past couple of weeks. Here are my observations to those that have never played them before and are contemplating buying them

  1. The controls are really ancient and besides the manual, it doesn't explain anything when you start. Don't be afraid to write the controls on a piece of paper till you get the hang of it. Took me like 10 minutes to understand the controls till I didn't need the manual anymore.

  2. Right click is pretty much the most important button in this game. Get used to it.

  3. Don't be afraid to constantly save. This is a game that came out a year after I was born and autosaving wasn't a thing at the time. Always save like you do in modern era Fallout games or you'll be set back to your last save. That's right…even back to the start of the game.

  4. Some special stats are useless compared to how they are in the modern games. To keep it simple: agility and perception are most important, endurance and intelligence important, luck if you want them sweet criticals, strength not so much since power armor boosts your strength(keep it at like 5-6 at the start), and charisma is just useless

  5. Be ready to miss…a lot

  6. Don't be a hoarder like in the modern games. I had to learn that the hard way.

  7. If you're trying to fire and can't even if you're in a straight shot, you probably need to reload. Right click where the weapon fire type is on the ui is till you see reload.

  8. Small guns is really one of the best skills early game. I highly recommend you tag it when you start.

  9. If you're not aware, there's a targeting system in-game that VATS in the modern titles takes inspiration from. Right click on a weapon fire type like a pistol till you see a aiming symbol at the corner of it. Be ready to miss though if you're not skilled.

  10. FUCK DEATHCLAWS. SERIOUSLY, THOSE THINGS NEED TO DIE

  11. Please stay out of your companions' line of fire. I beg of you.

  12. Speaking of companions, you can give them ammo and weapons by going to barter when you speak to them and just give it. You can even make them change armor.

  13. If you can't lockpick something, don't fret. Find a lockpick kit and equip it. Lockpick kits give a bonus to your lockpick skills.

  14. Final tip: don't visit the NW part of the world map till you feel strong. Won't say why though.

And that's pretty much what I've noticed. Id give more tips but I feel like i'd spoil everything

It's a complex game to understand but it's quite entertaining none the less. If you love the Bethesda ones, you might enjoy it. Don't go into it thinking it's an open-world game. Go into it like you're playing a tabletop game and you got to strategize.

And one last thing: FUCK DEATHCLAWS
