fallout 6 - Let’s talk about why Bethesda deserve a little more credit, and why I believe Fallout 76 doesn’t deserve all the hate it receives.

To start off with, this post is guaranteed to draw in hate and opposing arguments. This is just one persons opinion, we are all entitled to one and this is mine so far. Please try to keep it civil in the comments and keep the message positive!

So Fallout 76, I’m a fairly new player, I got the game for myself and my partner about mid-way through last year, but never really got into it until recently. When I first started off the game I wasn’t hugely into it, mostly because of all the changes, like the weapon wheel and the readdition of weapon and armour decay (a feature I missed in Fallout 4), it was a huge change from what I was used to and I couldn’t fully get into it. Fast forward to the beginning of January this year and I decided I’d give it another go, I played for a few hours, gathered some plans and supplies from the overseers cache and made my way over to a nice little spot by Deathclaw Island, and built my first basic C.A.M.P.

A few days and attacks on my C.A.M.P later, I moved over to the highway next to the top of the world. Set up stores and a tower to live in, and admired the scenery. That’s one of the main things I love about this game, say what you want about all the graphical bugs and minor lighting errors, but the landscape is truly beautiful, and filled with little features to admire and show the love put into the land design that you’ll be familiar with so long as you’ve played any other Fallout or games in the Elder Scrolls series. Moving base constantly I really got to admire the landscape and how the map was split up into different terrains and environments.

My C.A.M.P is now based in the top left region of the map, safe from attacks and secluded, overlooking the toxic valley and former amusement park now overrun by scorched. Looking across the world you can truly see just how vast the map is and makes you appreciate how big the world of Fallout 76 really is. But that’s just one thing I love about the game out of many, the addition of new creatures and cryptids, my first encounter with a double my level Wendigo took place in the toxic valley with a group of feral ghouls, fighting it side by side with a fellow player in the area.

The player base for this game remains incredible, since starting off I’ve ran into so many helpful players, one of the most memorable was a 200+ level player coming over to me in the middle of a fight I was losing, helping me out then giving me my first .44 revolver with over 400 rounds, that to this day I still have left. From people dropping me ammunition and useful scrap for my camp, to anonymous players leaving large amounts of supplies and plans in train stations for anyone to help themselves to, the players I’ve encountered in this game and by extension subreddit have been so helpful. I get the whole issue with hackers and the whole one bad apple mentality, but I’ve had no issues with any fellow players during my experience with this game.

One of the most talked about and despised features of this game is the Atomic Store, which seriously? I have no problem with. Fallout 1st is a whole different story and it’s not something I’ll be discussing. But the atomic store really isn’t all that bad. So far I’ve not purchased any atoms, and anything I’ve got from the atomic store I earned atoms for myself in the game, which really wasn’t all that hard to do, most achievements being completed without me even focusing on getting them done. I’ve earned over 1000 atoms in game so far and have got myself a scrap collectron, an oak floor retexture and some blue wallpaper, and I’m well on my way to getting myself the mini fridge.

The atomic store may be pushed a little at times, and I get some people dislike the pricing of some items, but so far just playing the game has got me what I wanted from the store, which is great, I’ve been able to grind away and get the items I desired without spending a penny, which let’s be honest, Bethesda could have done a whole lot worse and put everything in the atomic store into paywalled loot boxes. It may be a controversial topic, but I really don’t have a problem with the atomic store.

To me the pros of this game outweigh the cons by a dozen, the game has its issues, the game is by far not perfect, but whatever the case this game keeps drawing me in for more and I can’t wait to log back in and carry on my journey. I’ve played solo, I’ve played with friends, while still a low level I’ve equipped a gas mask and helped out (not by much, my poor little level 20 guns can’t keep up) with the scorchbeast queen fight. I’ve powered up Poseidon on my own, I’ve fought deathclaws and explored blast zones with my friends, and I’ve helped out any lower levels I’ve came across on my journey, be it a few bottles of purified water and cooked radstag meat, or lending a hand in a fight. I can play my own way, and I love every bit of it.

I may just be a low level with the world at my fingertips, new places to discover and new creatures to slay just around the corner, and I get that those who’ve exhausted everything by now and 400+ levels in may find the game a bit more stale than they once did, but for a first time player I have everything in the game left to do, and hundreds of hours still ahead of me for exploration and gear hunting. This game is made for anyone, people who prefer playing alone, people who want to jump in with a group, of those who like helping out strangers on their journey. There may be bugs, the game may not be perfect, but I don’t think I’ve played a single game that is.

My point is, to all the people out there hating on Bethesda for this “broken” game, give them some slack and give Fallout 76 the chance it deserves. I did, and I don’t regret it one bit. While I wouldn’t pay full price for the game ( I didn’t by the way, CD Keys for the win), it’s definitely worth trying at least once. Thankyou for reading, and I hope I’ve spread at least a little positivity into the community. To my fellow players out there, keep up the good fight, and keep spreading positivity around to new players!

Bethesda, negative press or not, you’ve created a wonderful game that has the potential to be so much more than it is. Keep working on the game, keep those improvements coming, and bring on Wastelanders in April!
