(copying this from my forum post before someone else does it)
So after I was told about a place on the PTS called the "War Room" in Crater behind Ae-Ri's shop, I decided to go check i out. I started talking to Pierce and I saw
this piece of dialogue:
I blinked. I paused. Is this actually happening?
I am Non Binary, which I assume is obvious by my pride flag in my profile banner and my PFP. I use they/them pronouns. I was scared to keep going, but I did. The conversation went as follows. I'll be typing it at first for accessibility then adding the screenshots after.
PLAYER: Tell me about Burke.
PIERCE: They don't talk much. Action is more their language. I wouldn't have it any other way.
PLAYER: Why do you refer to Burke as "they"?
PIERCE: Because it suits them better. When I first met Burke…they were different. Secluded. Like they didn't want amyone to see them.
PIERCE: Burke flinched when others talked about them. People expected things based on how they looked. They had these….titles. The Silent Man. Albino Dog.
PIERCE: One day I asked if something else would feel better. It took some trial and error, but we eventually settled on the neutral "they".
PIERCE: They're a much happier person now, for the insignificant price of a word.
PLAYER: I'm glad to hear that.
PIERCE: Me too.
PIERCE: We all have a public perception in this world. Sometimes it doesn't match what we feel inside. And there is nothing we can do about that.
PIERCE: But other times, there is. And I don't need to understand everything Burke is feeling to want to see a smile on their face.
Convo Screens pt 1
Convo Screens pt 2
If you are mean to Burke's face Sheena (the third member of the War Party) tells you to f**k off and Burke just sighs and says they are used to it by now and I want to say I see this mirrored a lot in my life. I am often all three of these characters. Burke, the non binary who's just used to people being shitty; Pierce who just wants to support his friends and does so however he can; and Sheena, who isn't afraid to stand up to folks who are meant to her friends.
….and here is Burke themselves! Both a
head shot and a
full body seated shot.
No camp/drag make up.
No stereotypical tropes of LGBTQIA+ fashion.
Burke is just your average raider dressed like a greaser who will f**k you up if you attack their friends and family. THANK YOU.
At this point I'm fucking crying. I never thought I'd see myself and so accurately my struggle with being visible due to having highly "gendered" body traits. I never thought I would felt so seen as more than a joke by any form of media that wasn't specifically made by other LGBTQIA+ folks for other LGBTQIA+ folks.
Thank you Bethesda. The only criticism I have is not being able to talk to Burke directly about their feelings on the matter, or their experiences. I was able to essentially make fun of Burke but not able to tell them directly that I support them, which seems like a slight oversight but everything else is so spot on for me. Thank you so effing much to whoever wrote this in. If I could hug you I would, but there's a pandemic on so please hug yourself (and wash your hands!)
