Sorry if this is already common knowledge of this sub, don't frequent too often.

So I think most of us have already read about the whole Metacritic thing — how Bethesda refused to give Obsidian workers any bonuses if their Metacritic score was less than 85. It was an 84. Bethesda did refuse to give those bonuses.

I just read an article now though that states that it wasn't just the bonuses that they tied to Metacritic scoring (oh the irony) — the royalties were, too. As in, the thing that everyone from video game developers to the most famous people in Hollywood depends on for a reliable stream of income.

"Unfortunately for Obsidian, Fallout: New Vegas currently has a Metacritic average of 84, a single point below the average that would've earned the company royalties on its product. " was a straight payment, no royalties, only a bonus if we got an 85+ on Metacritic, which we didn't," Obsidian creative director and co-owner Chris Avellone told one Twitter user. The Metacritic news comes just one day after we reported layoffs at the California-based developer…" https://www.engadget.com/2012/03/15/obsidian-missed-fallout-new-vegas-metacritic-bonus-by-one-point/

Oh, also, they gave Obsidian less than two years to make the game, too.

Idk if this changes anyone's view, but for me this spoke volumes. I have seen a lot of people, both online and some people making YouTube vids about this, who try to portray Bethesda as this company that was once great but was just inept and looking for a quick cash grab with 76. However, I'd honestly be willing to catagorize what they did to Obsidian as pretty vicious and very unethical? Maybe that sounds dramatic but real people literally lost their careers because Bethesda refused to pay what is seen as the bare minimum expected, and for such a ridiculous and hypocritical reason. All those many years ago, this huge triple A studio was placing obviously unobtainable expectations on this small company as a conceived way to stiff them.

Places like EA are seen as the greediest of the greedy in this industry, but I can't recall a single time when a story came out that reads this badly. Bethesda still profits from a game that is considered the very best of their own franchise, while all they did is throw peanuts at the real creators in return.

So many people seem willing to give Bethesda a second chance assuming they can do better but after stuff like this, I don't think they deserve any goodwill at all.

tl;dr What they did to Obsidian shows a willingness to possibly destroy an entire company just to save a few bucks, what they did is awful and any goodwill left for them should be gone for it. People compare them to companies like EA but Bethesda is arguably even worse.
