Serious VS Lighthearted: A clash of opinions regarding the nature of Fallout universe.

fallout 2 - Serious VS Lighthearted: A clash of opinions regarding the nature of Fallout universe.

Greetings to everyone, it's my first post here. Fallout's universe is a strange one. It can combine a serious, dark setting with some quirky, funny situations around the wasteland. Beginning with the release of Fallout 2, there were some voices that bashed the game's nature, that it strayed from its dark, serious path that Fallout 1 introduced.

There's a Latin saying: "De gustibus non est disputandum", meaning "about tastes, nothing should be discussed". And it's right. Everyone has his own opinion, his own tastes on things. Having said that, I've noticed two groups of people, one that prefers the quirky, funny aspect of Fallout 2, that "leaked" into the next games (Fallout 3, NV, 4 and 76 had their moments), while the other preferred the gloomy, unforgiving environment of Fallout 1.

Though I love equally all Fallout games (even 76) for different reasons, Fallout 2 was special. And not in a gameplay/role-playing sense only. Before Fallout 2, I was not fan of the post-apocalyptic genre. But this game proved to me that comedy can be found through dark humor in helpless situations which I love. I don't want a game to be dark, gloomy, serious all the time. When I saw Coffin Willie for the first time, I burst out laughing. Same with Woody, the sleeping ghoul.

While it may be an unpopular opinion, that's why I LOVED the sarcastic responses in Fallout 4. Well, not the fact that they existed as a simple "Sarcastic" response, but the fact that they existed. I liked the snarky comments of Valentine. Fallout 3 and NV on the other hand tried to be more serious, with some exceptions of course (Fisto, oh Fisto…). The same (maybe even more) goes to the two amazing mods I've tried, Fallout 1.5 Resurrection and Nevada. They focus on the darker aspects of a post-apocalyptic aspect. Which is not bad at all, but after a while you get so gloomy, you feel horrible.

All in all, it's a matter of taste as I've said before. Some people like their games to be more serious, darker, more "grounded". Fallout 1, and Fallout 3 in lesser extent, captured that feeling perfectly, due to their environment and ambient music (Fallout 1 was the master on this). Some people prefer the political aspect of New Vegas, which is by nature serious. Fallout 4 was also serious, but some snarky comments made it a bit more lighthearted I think.

All in all, it will be always a matter of tastes. And each one of us has a different personality, wanting other things. What Fallout 5 should do, in my humble opinion, is trying to find the golden ratio between dark themes and comedy. But what it's your opinion? Do you prefer it to be more serious or funnier?
