I’m aware that I am very late to the party here, but I recently bought FC5 on cyber Monday and have been in love with the game since. I get so immersed into the world, probably the most immersed I every have been in a game.
Today I finished Jacob’s region and while the final confrontation with him was annoying, along with the fact I was in the middle of another mission when he “Only you”d me, but the final trial was amazing in my opinion. When I did the second trial I thought it was a glitch or bug I was in the same place as the time before, but there was more at the end so obviously, I realized they just added more to the level. I thought it was pretty lazy at first. Then I finished the third trial and listened to the other deputy explain how the trials are the same and it becomes hardwired into your brain, just like Jacob’s song. I accepted it for story purposes but still thought it was lazy on Ubisoft. So I wake up in the final trial, fly through it because i know it like the back of my hand by now, and I whip around the last corner and put a bullet right between that hallucination’s eyes and my jaw hit the floor. All at once i realized who I just shot and where I was, the second it went into slow motion it was crystal clear to me.
I was honestly in awe with that mission, I didn’t even think twice about indiscriminately killing an ally and all I could hear was what Jacob said to me minuted before, “You are a tool,” and I did exactly what he wanted me to, not because I needed to to move on (though through the power of YouTube, I later found out you do), not because it was in a cutscene, but on my own free will I shot and killed the leader of the Whitetail Militia because Jacob conditioned me, not my character, ME.
Definitely one of the most simple, yet effective ways of making the player do something they don’t want to do on their own free will, and in a way that they even feel responsible. I don’t even know how to sum it up without rambling.
