Fort design is really only concerned with 2 things: Smashers and Sploders.
Sploders are best dealt with by making trap funnels that will kill them far enough from your base that they don't get the chance to throw, but best of luck if for some reason they spawn 4 tiles away.
Smashers on the other hand dominate the design considerations for forts making 90% of the forts I see (and after finally giving up, make) looking like this: <
