Frostpunk 3 1024x576 - My first playthrough - can't believe I survived...

I just finished my first playthrough of A New Home today. It was my first time playing Frostpunk and I honestly couldn't believe I'd survived.

I'm not very good at resource management in most genres, whether it be grand strategy, 4x, or simulation games like this. Its kind of a curse because I love these types of games so much. But I'd kind of made the decision to get into Frostpunk knowing that it would be a rough playthrough and that I'd probably fail, but then I'd be able to start another attempt with a better grasp of the gameplay concepts.

My playthrough was utterly miserable as far as my population was concerned. My coal production never picked up to the point I was stockpiling. Technological advancement was glacial. I never had enough raw food for my cookhouses to make plenty of food for stockpiling. Most of my population was living in chilly conditions for almost the entire game… most workplaces were straight up cold. It was just a straight up miserable city.

I went down the Order route, and while I generally embraced a sense of roleplay in my early choices, trying to be a firm but ultimately compassionate ruler, I ultimately went full Order because the more strict autocratic acts like patrols and executions really quell discontent, which helped me stay in power even as shit got awful for my city.

As I mentioned, my R&D was atrociously bad. I didn't even research the scope thing for the Storm prep. And I'd assumed that if I made it to the storm, I'd just ultimately lose, so I honestly stopped trying and fast-forwarded more, planning to just watch my city decay before trying another playthrough. It was so goddamn cold I had to burn the generator incredibly hot just to keep people alive… but still incredibly uncomfortable. And when the storm hit, I just stopped all micromanagement… I just burned enough to not go into the red and watched my population of 300 plus dwindle miserably down to under a hundred.

About a week or so into the Storm, discontent reached its peak and revolt was at my doorstep. But then I got a final reprieve when the storm ended, and the temp conditions helped pull the discontent back down before I got banished. And then I got the notification "We Survived…"

But my city only had 47 citizens at the game's end. Brutal.

I'll probably try a Faith run next and then another Order run after with better understanding of the mechanics. But what a ride. This game nails its tone so perfectly. In a way, one's first playthrough will probably always be the most true to the game's ethos… as it feels like a game about scarcity, sacrifice. I hope in subequent playthroughs I can give my people a slightly more comfortable life (and more people to continue the human race for God's sake!)

Just my thoughts. What a game!
