Everything I read about this game before I played it suggested it was incredibly harsh, and you would probably need to get banished a couple times before you got the hang of what you're supposed to be doing. I just beat the first scenario on my first try and I'm kind of disappointed by how many mistakes I was able to get away with. Several times I learned something and thought "I should do this differently when I inevitable lose and have to restart" but that never happened, I was able to get by basically just doing what the tutorial and quests told me to do, and being very inefficient.
I also discovered that some things I thought were random are completely scripted, such as the scouting locations and weather. So, it seems to me that there is a "correct" way to play each scenario, since they don't really change. Also, some upgrades are clearly much more useful than others, once you know how the systems all work (for example, upgrading generator range seems to be very inefficient compared to Steam Hubs, but I was never punished for this decision in my playthrough).
So, beyond playing through the 4 scenarios, is there much replay value in a solved game like this? I know there's an endless mode, but I was hoping for more randomization and reasons to have vastly different playstyles, something more akin to XCOM, where it might take you a few restarts to get a good run going. I also see that there is a super hardcore "no pause" mode, but that just seems annoying rather than strategically challenging.
I still love the game, don't get me wrong, I was just left feeling a bit disappointed when the first scenario just… ended.
