Unless a rotating Core Set is added, it doesn’t look like rotation will have much impact.

hearthstone 10 - Unless a rotating Core Set is added, it doesn't look like rotation will have much impact.

If anyone can recall back to the Year of the Raven rotation when Witchwood was added, that rotation was initially very lame. That's because the best deck in the game at the time (Cubelock), lost next to nothing with rotation and went into the new Standard year still incredibly strong and virtually unchanged. Thankfully, Blizzard nerfed several cards from it a few weeks in, and then the meta actually felt fresh, like a new rotation should.

I am afraid that we are in for another lame duck rotation, unless Blizzard does something to change it. Obviously it is way too early to really speculate too much about this, since there is a whole new set we haven't even seen yet. However, judging strictly based on what is leaving, I believe there is some cause for concern. According to HSReplay there are only 4 cards with a deck inclusion rate above 10% that are rotating (for comparison, there are 27 cards from Year of the Dragon with a deck inclusion rate above 10%), they are:

Zilliax (60.2%)

Snip-Snap (41.8%)

Lifedrinker (14.4%)

Witching Hour (10.7%)

While the loss of Zilliax and Snip-Snap is certainly very significant, that doesn't seem like a huge impact. Even looking in the 5-10% range we only find 9 cards (again, compared to 41 from YotD) from the rotating expansions:

Firetree Witchdoctor (9.6%)

Springpaw (9.2%)

Mass Hysteria (7.3%)

Crystology (6.1%)

Rat Trap (5.7%)

Town Crier (5.6%)

Blink Fox (5.4 %)

Zerek's Cloning Gallery (5.1%)

That makes a grand total of 13 cards that have a deck inclusion rate above 5%. Other than the fact that Mech Paladin is probably going to have a rough time (Crystology and all the Boomsday Mechs are a huge loss) and the loss of two staple Neutrals (Zilliax and Snip-Snap), it looks like there just isn't going to be much impact at all from the rotation.

Obviously a whole new set could change a lot. However, I am concerned that rotation is going to shake up things very, very little.

With all this talk about what is going on at the "Hearthstone Summit", I've been wondering if the addition of a rotating core set given for free to all players is in the works. Completely changing the Core Set around would certainly shakeup the meta game for veteran players, which is important this year when Year of the Raven's rotation is very lacking. Giving it away for free would also greatly enable the ability of newer or returning players to get on board with the game. That is the only thing I can think of that would help "new, returning, and veteran" players like Frodan's tweet mentions: https://www.reddit.com/r/hearthstone/comments/f6dt8r/frodan_really_hyping_whatever_was_shown_at_the/
