Malthael has one of the most diverse talent builds, which almost every talent in a tier is viable with a lot of utilities like healing reduction, unstoppable… I mostly pick him in league when I need to play as a bruiser and got pretty good result last season (63% wr in Diamond). However, there is one problem, it is his trait talents, particularly > and >. These talents are so bad that I have never seen anyone pick them, and I never pick them myself (level 3x Malthael). Let's do some analysis:
Black Harvest: Quest: Apply Reaper's Mark to Heroes for a total of 180 seconds. Reward: Permanently increase Reaper's Mark's duration by 2 seconds.
Let's compare it with a very similar talent from Qhira, >
Fatal Wounds: While at maximum stacks, Blood Rage's bleed deals 30% additional damage to enemy Heroes under 50% Health. Quest: Damage enemy Heroes with Blood Rage's bleed damage. Reward: After damaging Heroes with Blood Rage's bleed damage 200 times, Blood Rage's duration is increased by 2 seconds.
The Qhira's talent has an upfront reward immediately. (Note that this is a level 1 talent). Originally, It only required 125 stacks (!!) to complete and has bigger upfront reward (50% dmg). It has been nerfed several times but I still think the talent is still strong.
So both Malthael and Qhira traits deal damage every 1 second. But by nature, Malth is a offlaner that spends most of his time 1v1 and Qhira usually in a 4-man, therefore Malth will take much longer to finish his quest than Qhira AND he can only starts the quest at 4. I know each hero works differently but do you see how weak Black Harvest compare to Fata Wounds. Not done yet, it even competes with >, which is the best talent for 1v1. I still don't understand why Black Harvest need to have that hard condition to complete.
Next let's take a look at other talent >: Reaper's Mark deals 80% increased damage after afflicting an enemy for more than 4 seconds.
Memento Mori was strong long time ago when Reaper's Mark still dealt 2.5% max hp, but it got nerfed so hard now it barely deals any damage without Die Alone. So even with Memento trait damage is still weak. Also, Reaper's Mark needs to deal damage 5 times for the effect to proc. By that time, if you take > you would use your Q 3 times instead of 2, which also increases your sustain beside the damage.
Black Harvest: Increases damage of Reaper's Mark by 0.25% of enemies maximum health. Quest: Apply Reaper's Mark to Heroes for a total of 150
180 seconds. Reward: Permanently increase Reaper's Mark's duration by 2 seconds. (Increase it damage and reduce the time to complete the quest so it can be a more potential pick).
Memento Mori: Reaper's Mark deals 80% increased damage after afflicting an enemy for more than 3
4 seconds. (With this buff, the potential damage is unchanged but the increased damage can proc earlier).
TLDR: Malthael is my favorite offlaner to play and it's sad to see his iconic trait build dead so I have some suggestions to make the build more competitive to others. What do you think? Thank you for reading.
