Drek’Thar’s look in Warcraft III: Reforged seems to reference his Alterac Pass counterpart

Back when the

Echoes of Alterac Event launched, we finally got a proper representation of Warcraft in the Nexus. This included two models for the Chieftain of the Frostwolves – Drek'Thar:

At the time, I remember thinking that it was a very neat reference to the

Raven Lord Tributes from Cursed Hollow in the skull-decorations, given that the Frostwolves of the Horde is rallied by the Raven Lord in the

, also mentioned in Rehgar's Skin description:

The great Raven spirit had been right… The Alliance marched into Alterac with new allies and ready for war. While the spirit's strange power could aid him, to fight an army he would need allies.

It gives some insight in how the Raven Lord guided them, by manipulating the Horde into thinking he was someone else… which seems somewhat familiar (cough Sargeras cough). But, still, everything made sense, all things considered.

Enter Warcraft III: Reforged

Even though it released yesterday, the preview blog for the Orcs have been available almost a week. In there, a particular image is of interest:

Why…? The Raven skulls, which is what led me to this post in the first place: Why are they still there, if it was just meant as a reference, because of the Raven Lord's tampering?

This led me to World of Warcraft, which – inevitably – had to Drek'Thar's newest appearance outside of Heroes of the Storm. That search gave me the following examples:

  • 75683 drekthar - Drek'Thar's look in Warcraft III: Reforged seems to reference his Alterac Pass counterpart
Drek'Thar in Nagrand (The Burning Crusade)
  • 28518 drekthar - Drek'Thar's look in Warcraft III: Reforged seems to reference his Alterac Pass counterpart
Drek'Thar in Alterac Valley (Classic: Battleground)
  • 411916 farseer drekthar - Drek'Thar's look in Warcraft III: Reforged seems to reference his Alterac Pass counterpart
Drek'Thar in Nagrand (Warlords of Draenor – in the past)

Logically, the two versions from Burning Crusade and Alterac Valley looks familiar with the Heroes of the Storm version, in terms of the feathery look. BUT, there are no skulls to see, anywhere.

So… What Does It Mean?

Basically, it could mean different things, one of them being much more interesting than the other:

  1. It's a reference to the appearance in Heroes of the Storm, to make him look cooler, and Drek'Thar doesn't wear raven skulls in the Warcraft canon.
  2. There is an actual Raven Spirit, which isn't the Raven Lord, whom the Warcraft III: Reforged team has used a creative freedom to, just as above, make him look cooler. Given that there is "Raven Priests", it's not completely impossible.
  3. The Raven Lord contacting Drek'Thar is canon, and Drek'Thar is honoring the "Raven Spirit" with his garb, essentially retconning his look in Alterac Valley and the like in World of Warcraft.

No matter which one is correct, it's awesome that he looks as he does!
