How to Play Murky – An Analysis from a Terrible Player

HeroesoftheStorm 1 - How to Play Murky - An Analysis from a Terrible Player

Alright, this is my semi-guide on how to play Murky, with possible builds and all that jazz. While reading this, keep in mind that I'm an absolutely terrible player, but I hope my insight can shed some light on why this little fish fella is a powerhouse. I haven't seen many guides on Murky, and even fewer guides post-rework. I've fallen in love with him so I decided to give back and all that.

Overview

Going over his kit, he can seem to be extremely weak. At level 1 he has under 800 HP, and at level 20, even if he takes the talent that doubles his health, he still only has around 3000 health. His Slime ability looks weak (he has to get into melee with 800 HP), his Pufferfish is easy to dodge or kill, and the only saving grace to his kit is his bubble, which is absolutely bonkers. When you look at his trait, however, it all makes sense. Murky is able to respawn every 8 seconds throughout the entire game, and he can set his own respawn location . That's insane.

The main tool Murky has at his disposal is annoyance. If you get Tracer to pulse you, if you get the Butcher to Onslaught + Blast you, or in general get an enemy to use their heroic on you, you have done your job. If you die, it doesn't matter. You are a quarter of a hero, and a few seconds later you'll be back in the fight. You'll pop in and out, doing your best to infuriate the enemy (yes, making your opponents angry at you is your strategy), and making them spend effort and cooldowns just to kill you.

Murky talent builds follow one of two paths – Pufferfish builds, which are excellent at waveclear, mercenaries, and killing rooted enemies (some synergy with heroes like Malfurion or Xul), and Slime builds, which turn Murky into an assassin with a low respawn timer and a low-cooldown ability that does a ton of damage and slows. Each build has their benefits. I normally go Pufferfish, because the build is much easier to play (no real threat of enemy heroes if you're moving between lanes to clear minions and get mercs) , but in general the Slime builds are better.

Talents

Murky's tier 1 talents are interesting. You have the option between three talents. Fish Eye increases your egg's sight radius and health while allowing it to detect stealthed enemies, with the passive benefit of increasing your mount speed after popping out of the egg. This talent has its uses, but the ability to see stealthed enemies is more of a detriment than a benefit, because the enemies will see that they are detected and will know where your egg is. This is mitigated if you place your egg behind a Fort, but at that point the increased sight radius isn't too useful.

Egg Hunt allows you to place up to three fake eggs, and if they are destroyed they cast Slime on the enemy. This talent isn't too useful, but it has its niches. If they're all destroyed at once you can deal some heavy damage, and they offer vision.

A Fishy Deal grants you a stack of Bribe after killing a minion with Pufferfish, with 8 stacks allowing you to bribe a mercenary. This talent is INSANE. Even if you don't go with a pufferfish build, this talent lets you benefit off of lane clearing with free mercenary camps, which is a huge deal. This is by far the best Tier 1 talent, although the others do have some niche uses.

Murky's tier 2 is when you decide on a path. You can choose between Slime Time – a quest that will increase the power of your Slime by a large amount, or Tufferfish, an ability that increases your Pufferfish's survivability and damage by a large amount. There's a third talent in the tier, Living the Dream, that increases your spell power by 15%, though it's not that useful IMO.

Slime Time is a bit hard to complete the tasks for, but will increase your killing power by a large amount. Tufferfish, on the other hand, synergizes with other talents like Octograb or A Fishy Deal, while also being a good counter to heroes that rely on abilities to destroy your pufferfish.

His tier 3 talents are boring, but powerful. Black Lagoon increases his slime radius by 30%, which seems small but is a huge deal. This talent is by far the best in the tier, though the others are still viable. Slippery When Wet increases his Bubble movement speed and reduces its cooldown, which is situational but synergizes with talents like Slime Time (allowing you to kill two seconds off of the Slime cooldown) or Living the Dream, allowing him to live longer. The final talent in the tier is Time to Krill, a talent that turns Murky into an assassin if he hits people a lot. This one is an odd choice, but is viable if you know how to play the hero.

Murky has the odd case of having two extremely good Heroic talent choices. March of the Murlocs is an excellent choice for sieging or controlling an area (perhaps the objective), and even winning teamfights if your opponent's cant leave a fight for one reason or another. Octograb is a long, targeted, channeled stun that turns your opponent into a sitting duck for your teammates (and pufferfish) to kill. I enjoy March of the Murlocs more, but both are very good and have their uses.

Murky's fifth tier of talents includes Rejuvenating Bubble, Egg Shell, and Fish Tank. Bubble is probably the best of the tier, allowing your escape cooldown to turn into a survivability cooldown, and Fish Tank is also really viable if you have a melee or slime build. In most cases I would take Bubble, but if you spend a large amount of time lanefighting then Fish Tank is probably the talent to pick, as it allows you to leech health off of the enemy minions during a fight. Egg Shell is absolutely terrible and will get poked. Don't take it.

Murky's sixth tier of talents is straightforward, and you'll usually only take one depending on your build. Toxic Buildup turns Murky into an even stronger hero, allowing you to complete your quest faster and deal a ton more damage. This is the talent you'll take on slime builds, while on (most) pufferfish builds you'll take Fish Oil (your pufferfish casts Slime upon landing) for easy waveclear, merc damage, and bribe stacks. This synergizes with Tufferfish, letting you clear a lane with no effort. Wrath of Cod lets your pufferfish deal 15 percent of your target's health worth of damage over 5 seconds, Wrath of Cod theoretically synergizes with Octograb, but it's generally a better idea to take Tufferfish.

Murky's storm talents are very powerful, with the exception of …And a Shark Too!. The upgrade to Octograb is absolutely terrible, as it increases the damage output of an ability not meant to deal damage, and instead open up the possibility of damage. Never-Ending Murlocs is my talent of choice, allowing you to cast March of the Murlocs indefinitely, which opens up the possibility of siege damage if you're left alone and lets you hold the objective for a long time if your team guards you. Big Tuna Kahuna doubles your egg respawn time (which is negligible, as you'll still spawn way earlier than your team) and your health, which makes you even more powerful when it comes to securing kills. Making Inky is best suited for Slime builds, as it halves the cooldown of your Slime ability, but outside of niche situations I don't pick this talent. It's incredibly good, but the other two talents are way better.

Builds

I guess that I'll share my main two builds now.

Slime Build

A Fishy Deal – Slime Time – Black Lagoon – March of the Murlocs – Rejuvenating Bubble – Toxic Buildup – Big Tuna Kahuna/Making Inky

Optionally, replace Rejuvenating Bubble with Fish Tank, if you feel like you'll be more willing to sustain a fight than have a better escape option. Obviously, Octograb would fit this set, but I just prefer March in general.

Pufferfish / Merc Build

A Fishy Deal – Tufferfish – Black Lagoon – March of the Murlocs – Rejuvenating Bubble – Fish Oil – Never-ending Murlocs/Big Tuna Kahuna

Nothing really to substitute here. This is the build I usually go with, as it's easier for me to play, and I love getting Headhunter with 15+ mercenary captures at the end of the game.

Conclusion

As a Murky, try to avoid confrontations with fast assassins (Tracer, Genji) or assassins that get stronger by killing you (The Butcher) unless you're trying to bait out a heroic.

Hope that my guide helped some of you, I had a lot of fun writing it. Peace.
