Clans can wait. Role rework can wait. Match Making fixes for draft modes can wait. The game has han urgent issue that's being neglected an extreme amount. And this is something that players can't fix by just picking another game mode.
New Players. We need to treat New players like Royalty. Everyone has to start somewhere. It might surprise you to hear but even high level Grand Master players were new players once. But for some reason we don't. There's no effort to make the game more appealing to new players, by doing things like having a better map rotation that gets updated every week; so that new players get a chance to learn each map through real practice without being distracted by other 15 maps. It's terrible enough that heroes still cost gold or gems, a blunder that should have been fixed in heroes 2.0.
But rather than fix these issues and make the game more accessible to new players, for some reason we are doing worse than that and in its current state, the game is actively hostile to the concept of new players. More and more regions it is impossible for new players to find games. And those who can find games need loong waits. This has a compunding effect, the longer this issue takes to be solved, the less likely new players are to stay and the queue becomes worse and worse.
The AMA answer to this issue was really disappointing:
We are tracking queue times and match quality spread for our quick match queue and we have also noticed that newer players face longer wait times for their games due to our current game count rule. It is something we are looking to rectify and we have looked into ways of relaxing these restrictions. We want to make sure that new players have an easy and fast queuing experience, but we also are aware that there will be players with thousands of levels who would prefer to play with other players that have thousands of levels.
The devs are taking the usual route of treating this as a complex math equation so that the solution will come in 6+ months once they finally consider every possible angle. But not really, we need the fix right now. And the fix is to stop pandering to the community. Yes, players with 1000 games will be uncomfortable playing with new players, but that doesn't mean we should close the gates and make new players unable to find games.
And let's be honest for a second. It's QM. Everything goes. So yes, sometimes you'll get a Nova that goes AFK because your team didn't get 1st kill. Then it's okay to sometimes get a player that's just starting the game.
The fix is not complicated. Just need to sacrifice a bit of comfort from the "high games" players so that new players are able to actually give this game a fair try. The games played restriction needs to be removed urgently. This will impact match quality, but that's a lesser concern. After fixing this issue, the more complete solution can come later. But we shouldn't postpone it anymore.
