HeroesoftheStorm 5 - My personal Roles Rework with Drafting Guide inside!

The content of the article

The target of this Roles Rework is to make drafting as easy as possible for new players, however veteran players will know when to break the rules and why.

Any feedback for improving this post is welcome, if you have good reasoning behind it.

I'll be using the following roles:

  • Tank: peeling and/or engage.
  • Bruiser: solo who gives big front line too.
  • Specialist: solo who doesn't give front line.
  • Assassin: potential ganker who gives small front line.
  • Marksman: non-cooldown dependant physical damage dealer who can therefore pressure the front line.
  • Mage: cooldown dependant spell damage dealer.
  • Support: shields and utility.
  • Healer: healing.

When I say solo, I mean someone who'll be alone to take care of a Single lane or to Double soak.

The base scheme of a draft is as follow:

  • Slot 1: Tank.
  • Slot 2: Solo.
  • Slot 3: Damage.
  • Slot 4: Flex.
  • Slot 5: Healer.

You'll be drafting this way most of the time:

  • Slot 1: Tank.
  • Slot 2: Bruiser.
  • Slot 3: Marksman.
  • Slot 4: Mage or Assassin, but you can actually pick anything after you have covered the rest.
  • Slot 5: Healer.

You can also draft this way most of the time:

  • Slot 1: Tank.
  • Slot 2: Specialist, but you can also pick some particular picks here (non-Specialist marked as Single/Double below).
  • Slot 3: Marksman.
  • Slot 4: Assassin, that will be your second front line due to having a non-Bruiser in the solo lane slot and to avoid going triple ranged.
  • Slot 5: Healer.

If you want to draft something weird, you better have a good idea, else you'll just make the game harder for no reason.

As a general rule (only Warhead Junction being the exception), maps with vertical symmetry will allow double soak due to being not that big and having three lanes whereas maps with diagonal symmetry won't allow it due to being too big or not having three lanes.

Vertical Symmetry (Single/Double) without Warhead Junction:

  • Blackheart's Bay (Single: Bottom; Double: Top-Mid).
  • Dragon Shire (Single: Top; Double: Top-Bot).
  • Infernal Shrines (Single: Top; Double: Top-Mid).
  • Sky Temple (Single: Top, Bot if Global; Double: Top-Mid).
  • Tomb of the Spider Queen (Single: Bot; Double: Top-Mid).
  • Towers of Doom (Single: Top; Double: Top-Mid).
  • Volskaya Foundry (Single: Bot; Double: Top-Mid).

On maps with vertical symmetry (excluding Warhead Junction) you can play the Solo lane only in a specific lane and you better Double soak on two specific lanes if you don't wanna risk losing the most important lane while most of your team is on the opposite side of the map.

Diagonal Symmetry (Single) plus Warhead Junction:

  • Alterac Pass (Single: Top/Bot).
  • Battlefield of Eternity (Single: Top).
  • Braxis Holdout (Single: Top).
  • Cursed Hollow (Single: Top/Bot).
  • Garden of Terror (Single: Top/Bot).
  • Hanamura Temple (Single: Top).
  • Warhead Junction (Single: Top/Bot; Double: No)

On maps with diagonal symmetry (and Warhead Junction) you cannot Double soak and you can play the solo top or bottom based on how the objective will spawn, however it's common to see the Solo laner top in two lanes map and you better match, unless your team has huge push power compared to the enemy one.
