Heroes of the Storm

New or returning player? Some helpful tips.

HeroesoftheStorm 3 - New or returning player? Some helpful tips.

Hello friends, maybe you're new and came from a different MOBA or you haven't played in a while so here's some tid bits people may not know or think of. Going to do major ones (no particular ranking, just random order) then some random "tips".

1.) Soak/Globes – This is huge, soaking lanes is a big piece of this game and i constantly see at least one and sometimes even 2 lanes losing out on soak, yes that first team fight is fun but losing out on those first few waves is huge, with that being said unless you have a clear advantage or know you can win DON'T FIGHT TALENTS DOWN (more on that later), soak instead. Globes, this ones another big piece of laneing and with a good a bit of practice can actually bully your opponent out of theirs. Globes provide not only Health but also some mana as well, if you see your ally coming close it can be more beneficial to wait so they can benefit too, remember globes go from blue/red to purple before they leave. Also some heroes require globes for quest, if you hit tab you can hover over team talents and see if they do/don't a few notable heroes for this are Kael'thas and Stitches. This is a relatively new one but we have xp "globes" now and they require you to pick them up like regular globes or at least be within range so don't forget to grab them before leaving lane.

2.) Down in levels – If you're down in levels more so an entire talent tier then it can be better off to not fight your opponent, snowballing can happen in this game and giving up a big obj may suck but that comes into or next point FIND VALUE ELSEWHERE if you are down a talent tier this is a huge power spike for the enemy team and often times lead them to wiping your team quickly, forts are big xp buffs, if the tribute is top and your team won't be able to win the TF push bottom lane hard, capture multiple camps, yes you can all split off and push back a lane a small amount but if you're down in levels it may and can often times be better to make a game changing play then a bunch of small ones.

3.) Don't give up, change your strategy – Ive been playing since Alpha and have played well over 5k games, in this time i have seen some come from behind victory's for various reasons. the biggest thing being the team always adapting to change and this often times is brought up by someone speaking up. If you find your self dying to much ask yourself whats the cause, are you getting to close? Are you having trouble with a particular enemy? Is their tank diving you? 5 v 5 can get chaotic i often find myself looking at another hero thinking i am them and lose sight of things, instead of chalking it up as a loss speak up, maybe your team doesn't see it. It's much better to say "hey tank diving back line" *ping enemy healer outta position* "Im getting rekt in this lane, can x swap with me?" Remember varying players varying knowledge of battle, just because you think of it someone else may not.

4.) COMMUNICATE – Even in draft, if you can't play a specific class SPEAK UP, don't wait till last pick and then flame half way through match because you felt pushed into a class you can't play. Let your team know or even cycle through your comfort picks, if its a map where you have a hero that really shines let your team know, talk about what ult you'd like to go discuss your wombos, these things take a few seconds and it can help turn the tide of a TF especially when you synergize heroes again not everyone knows the strats/combos you do (side note wtf moments does have some great wombo ideas from time to time) I know reddit will tell you to mute everyone but honestly you don't need to, because you don't need to respond. If you're offended by profanity theres a filter other then that its just words, ignore them and most flaming stops, not worth feeding into, stops your TF potential.

5.) Party up/Add others – The fun part of this game is playing with others, yes playing solo can be nice but playing with other like minded players (casual/competitive) can be rewarding in its own way, I've played with several players since the release and we talk all the time and its great, not only do i have people that i know what their going to do in a TF and how they're going to play so i can adjust accordingly but i have friends that i can speak to about real world things and that makes the game more enjoyable as well.

6.) Try new heroes – Try mode allows you to test someone out before buying them and its a great way to learn new things, i had every hero at ten before 2.0 and i always had people ask what such and such hero was like and they always responded. "oh was always curious never tried" and that was always confusing why they never did, A LOT of these heroes are AWESOME and the build diversity! I recently tied smite and it wasn't the same, the items while neat made every god feel the same, no more does x slow? well some depending on their talent all could be chosen to by an item, and that's where i think this game shines, the heroes are can be built in different ways, 1.0 i was an adamant pulse heal BW hated shield build, now i have several builds ill use depending on who im facing, i love that about this game, the diversity among many heroes is huge and that allows for A LOT of flexibility, so you may not like the way one build works with someone but maybe you'll love another the biggest thing is at least giving it a shot first.

This is getting long so here's some random tid bits, feel free to add on. Cross promotion offers "free" gifts, Hearthsone/WoW/diablo give a mount and LoTV Deluxe gives Artanis and a mount. Currently WC 3 gives 4 heroes after purchase, recruit 4 friends party up and get to lvl 20 and get the infamous vulture mount. Hovering over camps on the mini map gives the CD time. New/Vets go to training mode, gives free gold if you've never done it. Leveling your lowest but closest heroes is a good way to farm gold. XP boosts stack, so play with friends and get rolling in gold and XP and loot chest. If you're unsure of a skill shot ask, going to smite i kept dodging heals, i thought they were coming from the enemy in the heat of the moment. Obj's can be game changers, go to them, if you are not give your team a heads up. Forts give one cata every three waves keeps give a constant flow of them. The core can't be hurt till at least one keep goes down. If you feel compelled to be toxic at least way to till the end, any game can be won but not when you intentionally feed/throw/afk if you must AFK at least leave so we get AI, i may be rude but i still wanna win. If someone is toxic feel free to mute, they may have something worthwhile to say but probably not and its not worth the stress.

Edit – Thought of more tidbits, Twitch is a great living tutorial, not only do you have the streamer but other people in the chat to ask questions to, i don't watch a lot myself but Grubby is a great visual teacher for HoTS for those who would like to see teaching and playing. Discord can be a pseduo clan for HoTS friends. It takes 6 seconds to hearth back. If you hit G then hold right click you can ping. Don't be afraid to shotcall if no one else is, it gives the team direction even if its pinging a couple times a game doesn't have to be much, just enough to get everyone on the same page.
