Wailing Arrow: 90 seconds; Shoot an arrow that can be reactivated to deal 228 (+4% per level) damage and Silence enemies in an area for 2.5 seconds. The arrow detonates automatically if it reaches maximum range.
Deafening Blast: Enemies at the center of Wailing Arrow's explosion take 50% more damage and are Silenced for twice as long.
Here's a reference image of how Wailing Arrow looks after picking Deafening Blast. The light pink area is the Wailing Arrow's normal effects, and the smaller purple area is where the Deafening Blast action happens.
The purple area shown is 36% larger than the actual effect area. The radius of Wailing Arrow is 3.5, while Deafening Blast has a radius of 1.5. However, the circle shown has a radius of 1.75, which means the smaller circle has 36% more area than the actual effect value! This alone would be misleading enough, but pales in comparison to the much more serious issue:
Deafening Blast measures distance between Wailing Arrow's center and enemy hero center, instead of to the edge of their hitbox!
Take a look at this image of a Deafening Blast arrow. The purple circle overlaps with the hitboxes of both training dummies, yet neither of them are affected by the extra damage and silence duration.
To illustrate how badly measuring from the center affects Deafening Blast, let's calculate its effective radius to enemy hero hitbox edge. Ie: if Deafening Blast was measured from Wailing Arrow's center to the edge of an enemy hitbox, what would its radius be?
The enemy hero's center is just barely within the purple effect area. We deduce that the effective radius must be 1.5-hero radius.
As a reminder: The radius of Wailing Arrow is 3.5, and the visual for Deafening Blast has a radius of 1.75.
|Hero radius||Example hero||Effective radius|
|0.63||Sylvanas, Valla, WM, LM||0.87|
|0.81||Alarak, Muradin, Leoric||0.69|
|0.88||Garosh, Mei, KTZ||0.62|
|0.94||ETC, Blaze, Butcher||0.56|
Compare the effective radius in the last column, against the visual indicator of 1.75. For nearly every hero, the effective radius is under half of the visual indicator. For the biggest ones (Alexstrasza in Dragonqueen form), the radius of the visual indicator is 7 times the actual effective radius!
I propose the following changes to make Deafening blast more consistent with other abilities:
Increase Deafening Blast's radius to 1.75 in order to match its visual indicator
Instead of applying the effects of Deafening Blast if it covers the enemy hero center, instead let it apply if it overlaps the enemy's hitbox.
