I understand that no matter what, people are going to AFK.

Cause Real Life > Game.

I get it. But it still sucks for the rest of us…

There needs to be something in place for those that get stuck with the bot that just stands in mid lane hearthing all game, no matter if it's pinged or not. Specifically talking about AFK players who do not return to the game.

Disconnect issues happen occasionally and can happen to anyone. It's those players that decide never to come back to the game that are the problem.

Here is an idea:

The game needs an AFK detection system, so it doesn't need to rely on players reporting. I'm sure the data is available, it's the implementation that would need to be done (if it hasn't been done already). Even without AFK detection, the devs could still put the following features in the game.

  • If Ranked game:
    • Players with a bot on their team receive increased Gold/XP and lose no ranked points.
    • The winning team players still win ranked points for the victory, but at a reduced amount.
    • AFK player loses ALL of the teams cumulative ranked points (-1000 points) for that game and is suspended.
      • 1st suspension is 2 hours; 2nd suspension is 8 hours; 3rd suspension is 1 day; 4th suspension is 1 week; 5th suspension is the rest of the season.
      • Suspensions are reset every Ranked Season.

  • If Unranked/QM game:
    • Players with a bot on their team receive increased Gold/XP.
    • "Pay to NOT Play" – AFK player loses Gold for that game and is suspended.
      • 1st game AFK'd is -25 Gold; second AFK'd game is -100 Gold; 3rd game AFK'd is -1000 Gold; 4th AFK'd Game is -2500 Gold; 5th AFK'd Game is -5000 Gold. Those that have little to no Gold will not go lower than 0 Gold.
      • 1st suspension is 2 hours; 2nd suspension is 8 hours; 3rd suspension is 1 day; 4th suspension is 1 week; 5th suspension is the rest of the season.
      • Suspensions are also reset every Ranked Season.

  • How to fix exploitation?
    • The suspensions are put in place to keep players from exploiting the system.
      • If it's a legit disconnect or ISP issue, then a 2 hour suspension is nothing. Heck, even an 8 hours suspension isn't that big of a deal if you weren't going to play that day anyway. It's those that rage quit, or repeat offenders, that are part of the problem. By increasing the suspension, it would be very difficult for an AFK player to try and "boost" another account by AFKing out.
    • It's not anyone's fault when a team has a bot, only the AFK player who left. Those that play against bot teams should not be rewarded as such and to help keep exploitation down (win trading) here are ideas:
      • The winning team in a bot game will receive reduced rank points no matter what.
  1. If the winning team has no bot on their team, they will receive normal Gold/XP, but reduced rank points.
  2. If the winning team HAS the bot on their team, they will still get increased Gold/XP for their hardship, but will also receive REDUCED rank points. They gain in an arguably trivial area (Gold/XP), but don't gain additional points from winning (to keep exploitation down). It serves as a consolation for the team with the bot, but it's not worth exploiting.

Bottom line: How is a constant 4v5 fun? I thought the idea of game was supposed to be about fun. Having a player leave the game is NOT fun. Let's work on a fix to make this a better game!

TL;DR: Players with bots on their team receive increased Gold/XP. Everyone receives reduced points when a bot is in a ranked game. AFK players face initially lenient, but increased severity of disciplinary action for repeat offending.

Anyone have any other idea, or perhaps like mine?
