Here's how auto attacks usually work:
The "|" represents the start of the auto attack timer, the ":" represents the moment when the damage goes through, as in, even if you cancel the animation after it the damage is still dealt, and you have to wait for the end of the timer to be able to auto attack again.
You can cancel the animation of an auto attack at any point. If you cancel it before the ":" then the timer gets reset and you can start attacking right away. You often see people canceling auto attacks really fast because it looks funny. If you cancel the animation after the ":" you can't attack again until the timer ends, and if you try to do it the champ just stands still looking at the target.
If the target goes out of range or out of vision or becomes untargetable, the animation will also be canceled, which means you can cancel an enemy's auto attack by walking into an unwarded bush or by flashing away, as long as you do it before the ":".
The basis for orb walking (or stutter-stepping, or whatever you wanna call it) is that you want to cancel all your auto attack animations as soon as possible after the ":" because the part of the animation that comes after is useless, so you can use that time for walking instead. If you accidentally cancel too early you waste all that time on an animation that did nothing and you have to do it all again. This is what is usually called canceling an auto attack.
Auto attack resets work like this:
Here "I" represents the moment the auto attack reset is used. Basically, they work exactly what the name implies, they reset the auto attack timer. If you used this right after the ":" you can get 2 attacks in quick succession, but if you use it right before the ":" then you will cancel an auto attack, like with orb walking.
It is important to note that the percentage of the animation that happens before the ":" varies from champion to champion and sometimes a champion will have it different due to different auto attack animations, specifically many auto attack resets have different animations that alter this.
Another thing that is worth noting is that many auto attack resets aren't cancelable: Blitz E, Wukong Q, Trundle Q, etc. What this means is that you can only cancel the (second) auto attack after the ":".
This also means you can't flash away to cancel the incoming auto attack (which is why you will still get knocked up by a Blitz E even if you flash away right at the start of the animation)
Titanic Hydra currently has a bug.
The empowered auto attack has lower attack speed than it should, so it kinda looks like this:
Here the "&" represents where the animation for the empowered auto attack actually ends. Notice that it's after the ":", which means you can cancel it and not miss out the damage, and if you do it you can start auto attacking again right after with regular attack speed.
Which means that if you spam right click on the target during the Titanic Hydra auto attack reset then it works like a regular auto attack reset that has a slightly longer delay before the ":" than usual. However, if you don't do it then you lose attack speed for 1 auto attack.
I don't know exactly how much attack speed you lose but it's more noticeable with more attack speed.
Here are a few clips, in all of them I am doing the following:
- Canceling auto attacks before they register with low attack speed
- Orb walking with low attack speed,
- Resetting an auto attack with an ability low attack speed,
- Resetting an auto attack with Titanic Hydra without spamming right click low attack speed,
- Resetting an auto attack with Titanic Hydra spamming right click low attack speed,
- Resetting an auto attack with an ability and then with titanic hydra while spamming right click with low attack speed,
- Orb walking with high attack speed,
- Resetting an auto attack with an ability with high attack speed,
- Resetting an auto attack with Titanic Hydra without spamming right click with high attack speed,
- Resetting an auto attack with Titanic Hydra spamming right click with high attack speed,
- Resetting an auto attack with an ability and then with titanic hydra while spamming right click with high attack speed
In this order.
Camille Q (Her Q is usually impossible to cancel, but Titanic Hydra seems to ignore this)
Trundle Q (This one is bugged, if you do aa-Q-titanic while spamming right click then the next auto attack starts very quickly and I don't really know why, but it's kinda hard to pull off. Also, he also has Camille's Q "bug", so I'm guessing Titanic Hydra can cancel any basic attack)
I might try other champs to see if Trundle's bug happens on anyone else.
PS: I fucked up a bit in some parts of those clips, with high attack speed the timings need to be pretty precise.
