Hello everybody, I'm back with the results of my marketing survey project "How should the next champion be designed?"
I'm sorry I'm late with the results, and thank you to all 564 people who completed the survey!
The top three favorite champion character wise are Jhin (12.1%), Kindred (4.4%), Aurelion Sol (3.7%). From this, I concluded that players prefer characters that are "Ethereal". Following the top three, players prefer Aatrox, Azir, Kled, Akali, Ekko, Draven, Jinx, Gangplank. People seem to like to see "Strong"/"Cool" characters in league, and making a character "Strong"/"Cool" is likely a safer design choice than trying to make a good ethereal character.
Though the role people want to see more of is much more balanced than I expected, people want to see less of mages and assassins, likely because of the recent releases.
Player preference of what they like to play is fairly spread out. Though, if we look at the data organised by the position of that champion…
We see that what people really prefer is offensive play style. Even though people want to see less mages and assassins while more tanks and supports, defensive positions are not as popular.
From the survey results, a champion like Yorick would be very popular, but I can't really say that Yorick is popular character wise or mechanic wise
So, I looked at specific complaints about recently released champions, and they all boil down to the same idea: "The champions are too complicated". People want a champion that is simple to play and simple to play against. They want to see kits that serve a specific purpose with clear strength and weakness. The challenge here is that the champion must be simple while having a unique mechanic.
So, I tried designing a champion that would fit the criteria.
Talos is a golem made during the time of the Blessed Isles. However, after the black mist took over the isles, the mist gained control of the golem. Now, Talos serve as the vessel of the mist, carrying out its will in the most direct way possible.
I designed Talos' abilities to all work with each other, making Talos a chaser.
Surprisingly, during the project, a new champion was released!
To me, Yuumi is a well designed champion. Not exceptional, but good. Yuumi serves a clear purpose in the game, has an interesting gimmick that serve as its core mechanic, and is visually appealing. As a person who played and played against Yuumi, I couldn't find any glaring issue with her that made her kit ruin my mood while playing.
That concludes my report of the survey. I'm very sorry that this is late and rushed. I wanted to put some more time and effort into this, but I could not find the time to do so. I hope you enjoyed my report, and I hope to come back one day to try something like this again. Thank you for reading.
