I myself tend to lean more towards out sailing my opponents. Anyone can hop on a cannon and fire upon someone with decent results, but it's not often I see people utilize sailing tactics to their full potential. If you have a pirate on the helm that knows how to position a ship (offensively AND defensively), you have an incredible advantage in this game. I believe I've won more encounters by outsailing my opponent, than I have fighting head on. (Given, I solo sloop quite a lot.) Don't get me wrong, I can and will fight when I absolutely have to, but being able to basically negate attacks by using sailing tactics alone can tend to mentally break your opponent. I've had plenty of people give up the chase because as much as they know how to use their weapons, they cannot fully utilize their ships sailing abilities. However, the running/navigating while escaping translates into learning how to position a ship when you DO decide to go on the offensive.
I've come to find this quote to be very true while playing SoT: "Hence to fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting." – Sun Tzu, The Art of War
The name of the game is adventuring and earning loot (gathering/stealing), and running into other pirates is unavoidable at some point. I'm interested in knowing what other players think when it comes to dealing with battles in this game. When the battles do break out, how do you prefer to deal with those encounters?
