Sea of Thieves

Having assigned roles beforehand is the most important factor in a battle. There are four major roles that every crew should understand and know how to perform in a galleon.

After playing a lot with randoms both in Discord and in-game. I've come to the conclusion that deciding roles as you enter the ship wins half the battle. I haven't lost a single fight in a month and a half by doing that before starting any voyage or fort.

The roles

  • The Captain/lookout: Maneuvers the ship, tells the crew to angle/raise sails and keeps an eye out for other ships or enemies in water trying to board or keg the ship. Also, when possible, manages the back sail. The captain has to be precise with the instructions. If a ship is coming, he/she should say something like "Galleon coming from NW, 2 mins away from us". Last but not least, having a sense of orientation and knowing the map up to a certain point helps a lot.

  • The Boarder: In any competent fight, two galleons can be battling for ages, so it comes to this person to end the battle and disrupt the enemy's actions. With a good boarder in your crew, you only need two cannonballs to sink a galleon while the boarder is interrupting the repairs.

  • The Sailmaster/repairman/cannoneer: This person ALWAYS has to be in ship following the commands of the Captain to adjust the sails properly, fire the cannons or repair the hull. Also, it is extremely important to watch the ladders and water for enemies while killing time. I've seen that in a lot of crews this person gets bored and abandons the ship trying to slay someone while leaving the Captain alone and repairs unattended. One of the biggest mistakes, if you ask me.

  • The Jack of all trades: This person is a substitute to any of the other crew members. Your sailmaster has died because someone boarded? Congrats, you are the replacement. Your Captain's game has crashed? You take the wheel. The Boarder asks for help? You secure your ship first and go to help him. You have been kegged? You bail water like there's no tomorrow.

So, before you start sailing, ask you crew for roles. Usually, there's someone more comfortable with something. And of course, don't freak out and communicate well (never in game, as people will hear you).

I hope this helps new players or people struggling with naval battles!
