Sea of Thieves

Playing this game with thalassophobia means that sinking has real life consequences. Does anyone else share this fear with me?

So you're probably wondering, of all the games to play, why would I choose this one? Well, despite my crippling fear of deep water, I've always had a tremendous respect for the ocean and its beauty. I have sort of a morbid fascination with it. I love whales and dolphins (when are they going to be added to this game!?) but I would never want to encounter one in the wild.

I have to share a pretty horrifying experience I had with this game. I play with two buddies, both of which prefer to bee-line to the nearest ship for combat. That's not really my bag; I'm more of a lover, not a fighter. I just love the joy of sailing the open ocean with some buds. But since they're the only ones who play this game I have to tag along on their hunts.

We're on our galleon and engage another ship who actually fired upon us first. My buddies HAD to have revenge of course, so we get into a heated engagement. We're losing, like always. During the engagement, I'm on hull repair while also bucketing out the water. The water is rising and rising beyond my control, and to my horror, I realize it is too late. We've taken too many hits. I cannot stop the water from rising any longer.

We are going under.

So, my buddies bail above deck, but I get trapped in the mid-section. I get disoriented in the water due to the rapidly downward plummet of the ship. I'm not gonna make it out through the top. Oh my fu*king God I am going down with the ship, aren't I? I still had an opportunity to leave the ship but that would mean escaping out to the middle of open ocean. Nope. No fu*king way. I'd rather just stay in the sinking ship and drown thank you very much.

Well, I go further and further down. We were probably fighting over one of the deepest spots in the game. It takes a minute or two to finally hit the bottom of the sea. Alright, alright. I'm okay, I'm in the ship, and I'll probably start drowning so that I can just respawn. It's all cool.

Then my ship just…disappears. It vanishes. WHAT?! NO!! There I was, alone, at the very bottom of the dark ocean. Every god damned nightmare I've had about the sea was now being virtually rendered before my eyes. I screamed. I threw my mic and headphones down. I walked away. I will not be witness to this. My character will drown and I'll come back to him just chilling on the ghost ship.

Despite the horror, it's very …invigorating. It gives me inspiration to live. To stay above the water. It's almost like this is a survival horror game to me. I have real life consequences to losing in this game. That's why I love this game. Thanks for reading.

TLDR I am terrified of the sea but still play this game. Am I alone?
