No fan wank, all evidence from the wiki

The gauss rifle may be confusing at first, Its a railgun but has casings. It fires 8mm spikes of DPU, but images show the bullets being .50 cal. Here is a idea of how all of this works. Its simple really that fits with lore.

The propellant system is already stated on the Wiki. It is a hybrid, The bullets are fired with conventional chemical propellant, but as it travels along the barrel, the weapon is a coilgun, so it is accelerated by electromagnets even more as the round travels through the barrel. A two-stage acceleration system. That is why the Gauss rifles have casing and are "gauss rifles" and why it fires spikes at hypersonic speeds 1500m/s, normal 0.50 cal rfiles fire at 900m/s.

The round is up for debate, and the source of many underestimations for the power of the Gauss rifle. People think that the gauss rifle shoots normal 8mm or 0.50 cal (12.7mm) bullets. But everything else says it fires a 8mm spike. The solution is simple.

The round is an Armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding Sabot. An 8mm spike of DPU is set inside a 12.7mm Sabot to fit the barrel. Like the ones in modern tanks.

DPU is not very magnetic, so the Sabot surrounding it may be magnetized metal to take better advantage of the electromagnetic acceleration. And that means the 8mm spike is nearly the length of the bullet, and DPU weighs 3 times as much as steel, so that gives a gauss rifle projectile 80-90 grams of mass.

combined with the velocity, that gives it the kinetic energy of a 25-30mm Autocannon. Usually mounted on IFVs

And fires at 30 rounds per second at maximum (I imagine it can be adjusted). Its pretty much an AA gun, no, it won't be shooting down battlecruisers, but Gauss rifles would actually be viable against Mutas, Banshees, etc in lore. All of this makes sense. The starcraft 1 field manual, commenting on the Goliath having two conventional 30mm autocannons was that 2-3 marines could easily outgun a goliath.

Since it is the C-14 "impaler" gauss rifle, the APSFDS is standard ammunition.

(And of course while a spike cannot carry a payload, its still a smoothbore 0.50 cal, you can shove whatever normal ammo you like into it, explosive, acid, and you """""JUST""""" have a 1500 RPM 0.50 cal heavy machine gun. Weaksauce.
