I’m ScSwarm’s ChrisPBacon, and this is my story

starcraft 6 - I'm ScSwarm's ChrisPBacon, and this is my story

For a couple years now, I've looked up to Sc2 players, and have always wanted to play the game. There was one huge hurdle, however, that I just could not overcome. The game's too damn hard to learn.

In that time, I've played a LOT of co-op and vs. AI games, and enjoyed them immensely. Playing against another human, as many of you know, is a completely different story.

I just kept repeatedly getting destroyed. I even got a coaching session from RunaMoK (Awesome GM level Terran coach btw) to help me learn the game faster. Except there was one huge problem still. Every game I played felt like a battle against the game. It was a constant struggle of executing a single build (2-1-1), and not floating resources. I wasn't actually playing against the other player, I was just repeatedly getting spanked by the game. And it kept reminding me what a trash player I was.

Fast forward to March earlier this year, I decided to take another stab at learning the game, but I did it differently this time. I decided to switch to Zerg, stumbled upon the Sc2Swarm website and discord, and signed up to compete in the CTL. And let me tell you, it was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Instead of a lonely struggle against the game, with the only reward being ranking up (Aside: Who cares about league borders really?), it became a team effort to win the league. The team's GM and Masters players took me under their wing, and coached me to be a better player. The friends and rivals I've found over numerous teams and communities kept me motivated to keep improving and avenge my previous loss. After joining the team, Starcraft was no longer a lonely trudge through the ladder. It turned into a bunch of watch parties, strategy discussions, and fun, friendly competition. A place that felt like home. I've even found really cool coding and spreadsheet projects to work on with a bunch of really smart, awesome people.

Since joining the team, I've won the gold in the CTL and Platinum Heroes II tournament, participated in the OPL, and captained the VTL team, amassing a 19-8 record across all competitions, all over the past 5 months! I've transformed from a complete noob to a pro player (I've won $25 okay, I'm *technically* a pro), and most importantly, I'm having *fun*.

Seeing all the recent posts on the difficulty people have had learning the game has inspired me to write this post. If you can relate to how I felt, or if you're just a new player trying to improve, I highly recommend joining a team, or even just hanging out in the various communities on discord. Trust me, you won't regret it.

TL;DR: Wanted to learn the game, but was too hard. Found and joined an awesome community in ScSwarm, and am having the time of my life competing/practicing/hanging out.
