Stellaris

A “Scenarios” mode would be a tremendous addition to the game.

stellaris 4 - A "Scenarios" mode would be a tremendous addition to the game.

Basically, campaigns that allow the player to experience different parts of the game, role-playing as a specific empire in a pre-scripted galaxy. The game mode allows for more asymmetrical game play, and a story driven experience. These campaigns could utilize a decision tree system similar to HOI4/EU4/Imperator Rome's, with very story specific events/decisions popping up depending on which campaign you play, as these features that would not integrate well in the free-form sandbox mode we have now.

It would also allow the Devs to stretch their writing muscles, and develop the some of the lore around Stellaris. This feature sort of mimics the Origins feature, but expands upon it greatly as Origins begin to feel irrelevant after the early game.

Hypothetical Scenarios

The Rise of Mankind (Hard/Very Hard)

  • You can play as the either the United Nations of Earth, or the Commonwealth of Man.

  • Having just invented hyper-drives, you start as a relative newcomer to the galaxy filled with advanced alien empires. Your empire starts with some bonuses to research and growth along decisions along the campaign that will give you a leg up, compensating for your relatively late start.

  • Eventually you will have to deal with your wayward Human brethren, whether through peaceful unification or violent annexation. CoM would start off at an even greater disadvantage compared to the UNE.

  • Whether you seek to unite the galaxy through the ideals of democratic pluralism, or conquer it to secure mankind's future is up to you.

From the Ashes (Normal)

  • You start off as a remnant civilization of the fallen First League.

  • Exploring space, you will begin to find scattered archaeological sites, giving clues to what your previous civilization was like, and the cataclysm that caused them to fall from power.

  • Other inter-stellar civilizations are also descendants of the once galaxy-spanning First League. Many of them have different ideologies. Some of them have preserved the parts of the First League's advanced technology, and jealously hoard it.

  • Your overarching goal of the campaign is to form the "Second League" by reuniting the galaxy. What type of federation this is depends on your ideology.

Impending Crisis (Hard)

  • You start off as a medium sized mechanistic civilization in the mid-late game. ~ year 2300

  • The leaders of the your civilization receive a vague admonition about the coming of an apocalyptic crisis. The Contingency will wake from its current hibernation cycle in approximately 70 years.

  • Several archaeology sites across the galaxy reveal more information about the Contingency, and the Cyberex civilizations.

  • You have to convince the galactic community to take your empire seriously, and set up preparations for the coming crisis.

Intergalactic Expedition (Normal)

  • Your empire is an expedition from another galaxy, consisting of multiple races.

  • You starts off at the edge of the galaxy. You have three colony ships, several warships (~10k fleet power), and a substantial resource stockpile (but severe deficit due to no planets)

  • You're significantly more advanced that any other empire in the galaxy. However, they're much more established.

  • Over the course of the game, you need to leverage your advanced technology to survive in this galaxy and eventually colonize it. Prevent the other empires from uniting against you, play them off each-other, otherwise you'd certainly lose despite your technological advantages.

  • During the end-game, your parent civilization sends another expedition into the new galaxy. This one is massive, and serves as an optional endgame crisis. You can either fight them off with your native allies, or join them, but become subservient to the new colonial administration.
