TL;DR, the premise and results:
I left my one and only planet to develop 100% on it's own for 200 years and observed the 2.3 planet AI to see how it turned out. Details of the setup will follow. Main observations of things the planet AI did:
- Immediately cleared all blockers
- Immediately upgraded all buildings the instant the upgrade became available to build. This included the capital building: the instant the planet had the requisite number of pops it would upgrade. You have to be very careful with this one. If you have a lot of planets, and research the tech for, say, an upgraded level of alloy foundries, the AI will spam-upgrade every single one you have and possibly completely wreck your economy for a while.
- Built districts in an even spread across the district types, with
nexuscity districts possibly being the highest priority (on a size 25 planet, 6 each of generator/mining/agriculture, 7 of nexuscity). It might have gone from left to right, I'm not sure, I'd have to try it again and watch for that specifically. I wasn't watching it the whole time so I'm not sure WHEN it decided to build a particular district, but it definitely had nothing to do with my energy/mineral/food income. My hunch is that it was just trying to sastisfy employment and housing. I was positive on energy and food the entire game, and it still built 6 of each. Maybe intentionally going negative on one would reveal if it gives priority to what you are lacking.
- Never built any strategic resource buildings, either the ones for my rare planetary features or the normal ones that make them from minerals. By about 2/3rds of the way I was 3x -25% jobs production from lack of all three strategics.
- In fact, it never built a single building to correct any deficiency of any kind at any point (unemployment, lack of housing, any resource I was in the red on, etc.), with one exception: when crime got high due to unemployment after I maxed out on districts, it built a Precinct House and then upgraded it to a Hall of Judgement to bring crime back down. This also meant I never got robots or droids even though they were available. I find this one really odd, since I know for a fact the AI put down various other buildings in my previous game.
Okay, long version, the why and how.
I just came back to check out the 2.3 changes after a break of several months. This was my third "game" of the patch.
I got like 7 achievements on my previous run, and as I was looking up some other ones to shoot for I noticed the Peacekeeper achieve:
As a pacifistic empire, be at peace for 200 consecutive years (crises do not count as wars.)
I find this to be an EXTREMELY boring way to play the game. As I already had an evening planned of chilling out and binging some Always Sunny (great show btw), I decided I would cheese the achieve by just letting the game run in the background for 200 years without any enemies. But I also wanted to do a little 2.3 AI experiment at the same time.
I set up the game to run out the 200 years as fast as possible with no possible way for me to fail the achievement:
Tiny elliptical galaxy.
No AI empires whatsoever (no normal empires, no fallen empires, no mauraders)
Normal midgame and endgame years
0.25x tech cost.
Fanatic pacifist – spiritualist
Life Seeded, Agrarian Idyll
Gave no traits to my pops.
Only mod was tiny outliner (does not affect gameplay). Version was Wolfe 2.3.2 (8614) (beta).
For the first couple years of the game before I started to AFK, I turned on planet automation, set sector focus to "General", built the one mining station in the system, and set up various policies, edicts, and decisions in order to maximize growth. And then I went to watch TV.
From then on, I came back to the game to check up on how things were progressing after every episode, so roughly every 25-30 minutes. The ONLY actions I took from that point on were to spend a few minutes selecting various technologies (they finish ultra-fast at 0.25x cost, so I could get in like a dozen techs between every episode), replacing dead scientists, and clicking away random event notifications (mostly caravaneers). That's literally it. I didn't move my ships, didn't take any traditions, never even left the system, clicked the "don't do anything" option on every random event that I experienced, etc.
For tech selection, I prioritised basic production and economy (i.e. +20% minerals from jobs), then building upgrades. If the options only applied to space-things (weapons and components and stations and such), I just chose the cheapest one to roll a new set as fast as possible. For scientists I picked the youngest one available.
I think that about covers it. The main observations are above, but some side-observations:
I forgot that you can turn off Caravaneers now, and boy were they fucking annoying.
In the absence of other empires to visit, it seems they just sit in your space for forever, constantly adding/removing refugees and shit. I turned away every refugee dialog box thingy I saw, and at the end of my game my planet was still approx 75% original race, 12.5% each of the two refugee races.
I clicked "Let the sun swallow it" and "My precious!" so many goddamn times.
The Enigmatic Cache also never leaves.
Not related to this game, but it's 2019 and we STILL CAN'T REORDER SHIT IN THE OUTLINER. Paradox should be fucking ashamed.
The whole process took about 3 hours and 50 minutes of game run time to get to 2400.01.01.
And oh yeah – I got the achieve and finished season 9.
