Stellaris Blind Accessibility, Where Things Stand on Founder’s Day :)

stellaris 3 - Stellaris Blind Accessibility, Where Things Stand on Founder's Day :)

Hey all,

I thought that there might be some interest in an update on where things stand, with regard to playing this game as a totally blind player. It is my birthday in at least one part of the world, so I figured it was a decent excuse for an update.

Thanks to some excellent modding assistance, The galaxy map, which was previously profoundly difficult to use, has been rendered much less necessary, and equally less annoying. I’m able to do most of my exploration and construction from the system view, which seems to be working out quite nicely.

I’m currently playing what I think of as an experimental game. I’m not trying to do well in any sense, as u/oasis1701 can attest, I am more than willing to cheerfully ignore rampant criminality on the home world if it will make for a slightly more fun experience. More to the point, I am trying to use as many mechanics as I can, or at least as many screens as I can, to get a feel for the layout of things, and how they interconnect over the long-term. I’ve just been fussing with starbases, and upgrades to same, which was an area I had previously not explored. I expect this game will end in tears someday soon, when one of the species I have contacted decides I am not worthy of protection, but deserve death instead, but for now that has not happened. The accessibility in general is a bit of a moving target. One of my friends has gone a little bit nuts and decided to bookmark everything he possibly can, in order to make the experience a little faster and easier to handle. This is difficult, because there is no way to separate bookmarks by interface, or what have you, so it’s all a little bit jumbled together. He thinks we might hit 500 bookmarks by the time he’s done. I don't know how likely that is, but it's definitely not impossible.

Looking to the future, I’m hoping to do a more gameplay focused demonstration at some point, targeted both at this community and at other blind gamers who are interested in this style of game. I haven’t revealed the project in any larger sense, because I figured that they will just bombard me and anyone they can with questions I’m not quite sure how to answer, but I hope to be able to do that at some point. In the meantime, I’ll continue to have fun, and enjoy the story of my slightly ridiculous take on humanity and it’s stumbling steps into the stars. Thanks as always for the support and encouragement.
