The Najklax:

These intelligent species called themselves the NaJklax, or at least that is the closest a Dwarf could come to pronouncing the sounds they made when they referred to their kind. Najklax language is communicated mostly by a large number of clicking and grinding sounds made by both their mouth parts and their spiracles on their body. Unlike Dwarf spoken language, structured sounds alone did not carry a words meaning. The sounds pitch, length and reverb all contributed to a complex system of syntax. Smell was also very important. The Najklax lacked any form of facial expressions, so they instead expressed emotional states through a number of subtle scent changes which, coupled with language, could change the very meaning or intent of a sentence.

It was clear that Dwarfs lacked the capacity to speak to the Najklax without technological aids, so engineers on the observation station set about building portable devices that the researchers could use to communicate with the aliens. Common everyday com devices were modified with enhanced speakers capable of mimicking all known Najklax sounds. Small aerosol attachments with synthetic alien odor were added, as was an atmosphere sampler adjusted to detect such odors. Together with the algorithm constructed by the lingualstudy and compustudy specialists, these devices could translate common Dwarvish into Naj auditory and scent languages and vise versa. A visual display allowed the user to view the emotional state of the Naj.

The predominant political structure of the Naj was that of an authoritarian caste system centered around a central matriarch, called an All mother, or a cooperative of them in larger settlements. Subtle changes in their gene expression determined a Najklaxes caste. Considerable changes in their brain structure, body shape and appendage functionality resulted from these caste determining gene expressions and would make an individual considerably more or less suited for a variety of roles. As a society, the Naj were considerably aggressive. Their nations were often at war with their neighbours over resources. It became apparent that the benefits of enlightenment had to be explained to them in a way they would understand, via a cost verses benefit method.

Contact:

The Naj home world of Dressel, a cold alpine wilderness, had much potential resources but the Naj lacked the means to exploit it. As Guild shuttles landed at Naj settlements, many were greeted by the warrior caste in defensive posture. Shuttle speakers transmitted Naj local greetings and expressed the purpose of these visits, to meet their settlement representatives. Reactions were often cold, but the shuttles refused to leave until a representative arrived. The on board Dwarfs introduced them selves as the star people and explained that they wanted to teach the Naj.

The responses were varied, most required proof or a demonstration, these were easily given. Gifts of precious metals and gems were also given in considerable quantities to Naj settlements to ease tensions and hasten acceptance. Once Naj settlements agreed, the Dwarfs finally revealed themselves. This shocked the Naj, who were expecting creatures similar to themselves. Nevertheless teaching began in earnest.

Specialists from every field of study were dispatched to Dressel where large gatherings of Naj students awaited their teachers. Tools and machines were given en masse to the Naj who were then instructed in their use. Foundational theories taught and explained and existing Naj methods critiqued and improved upon. Dwarf teachers taught thousands of Naj, and those Naj went on to teach millions more. The process took over a decade but there were few setbacks. The Naj grew to admire the Dwarfs, though they didn't care for their pacifism, they acknowledged their power and knowledge and the great lengths they went too to teach the Naj.

Ceremony:

When the enlightenment process was completed, and the Najklax fully grasped the gifts they were given, there was only one thing left to do. Formalization of a relationship between all Najklax and the Guild Federation. Naj nations formed their new official governing body which they named the High Kingdom on Dressel, ruled over by the most powerful matriarchs. This new government selected the finest diplomats their species had to offer to travel among the stars to Alaria where writs of federation would be signed and ceremonies of friendship conducted.

The months it took for the Najklax delegation to travel to Alaria were spent familiarising themselves with Dwarvish customs and protocols. Their Dwarf aids also tutored them on Dwarvish society and what they could expect when they arrived. As arrival day approached, Federation citizens became more excited. This would be the single most important event on Alaria since the first test flight of the hyperdrive, maybe the most important event ever. This would be the first visit from an alien race and mark the transformation of the Guild Federation from a Dwarvish nation that had reached the stars into a multi species, inter planetary Federation. A day of celebration was declared and extensive preparations were made.

Finally, the day all of Alaria, indeed all Dwarf kind had been waiting for arrived. Massive crowds had gathers around the Federation Congress, cordoned off by lines of enforcers. As the delegates shuttle approached, the crowds fell silent. The shuttle came to rest in the Congress gardens, on a hastily prepared landing pad. As the shuttles engines eased and faded, lines of enforcers stood at attention on both sides. Finally, the shuttle doors opened and the Najklax delegation began to emerge. The crowds erupted in ecstatic cheering and applause.

The Naj delegates had metallic masks over their mouth pieces. These devices were refined translators designed for the Naj themselves. They also had metallic plugs in all of their side spiracles. These acted as filters for their respiratory system. The Naj were unaccustomed to the warm and humid air and their lungs would become inflamed with prolonged exposure. The Najklex delegation were met by the Federation Grand Master and other Ranking Guild Masters. Representatives of every guild, large and small were also there behind the enforcer lines.

Using what they had learned, the Naj diplomats looked at the lines of representatives and raised one of their forearms and spoke friendly greetings. The Federation Grand Master approached with his right hand raised. The lead delegate returned the greeting, then unexpectedly, the Naj removed their translators and spoke in common Dwarvish. The sounds were crackly and harsh but thanks and greetings could be clearly understood.

Celebrations went well on into the night with the surrounding parties watching and re-watching media reports and interviews on today's events. The Najklax, for their part, participated in dining and dancing customs and they hid their discomfort well. The High Kingdom on Dressel was made a subject state of the Guild Federation but were granted extensive independence and self rule withing their home system. Terms and conditions for migrations, trade and cultural exchanges were agreed upon and generous subsidies of minerals and alloys were granted.

Tremors:

During the same period, one of the two Dwarf colonies began to experience unexplained tremors and earthquakes. It was discovered that there was a preexisting subterranean civilization living on the world the Dwarfs had colonized. This unidentified race appeared to be excavating caves for their own purposes under the Dwarfs settlements. Drilling devices were used to breached these new alien tunnels and contact it inhabitants. It took a number of months, but communications were established.

As expected, the vibrations from the Dwarf surface settlement had attracted these underground dwellers. An agreement was reached and the aliens promised to keep their mining operations away from Dwarvish settlements. Over time, more communication with these new aliens was had and an area of mutual exchange was agreed upon. Trade began to occur between the surface and underground world. These aliens, who called themselves Ospranians and were remarkably avian like despite spending their entire lives underground, were rich in minerals and metals and traded for foodstuffs from the surface. Cultural exchanges also began to occur and Ospranian goods started appearing in Dwarf markets and homes.

Relations with this underground nation continued to steadily improve. Unlike the Naj, the Ospran had control over their realm and Federation explorers and specialists couldn't freely study their underground cities or its people so knowledge about them was limited. Eventually, internet conflict among the Ospran escalated into a war and a request for arms was made to Federation officials. The enforcer guilds advised against granting the Ospran request on the grounds that it was a security risk, yet it was decided that giving arms to the Ospran government would hasten the end of their conflict and a return to stability.

A number of years passed and the Ospran civil war had finally come to an end, yet thousands of Ospran refugees began coming to the surface seeking asylum. This was surprising yet as the details of the conflict became apparent it was learned that the war was over spiritual disagreements within the Ospran state religion. Without realizing it, the Federation had assisted in the purging of heretics. The Ospran authorities demanded the return of the refugees so that they could be punished, however, guilt ridden and sympathetic to their plight, the Federation granted their refugees asylum.
