(Mk.3(I))

Vickers MBT Mk.3

The Vickers MBT Mk.3 is developed from the Vickers MBT Mk.1. It was revealed in the late 1970s for foreign market, often referred to as a "cheaper Chieftain". About 100 tanks were sold to Nigeria and Kenya. The basic Mk.3 has a hull largely the same as the Mk.1, with the exception of having a Detroit Diesel 12V-71T diesel, which is an upgrade over the previous Leyland L60, giving out about 720hp.

The Mk.3 has a brand new cast turret that loosely resembles the shape of the Chieftain turret. It has increased protection over the Mk.1 but contains no composite armor. The tank retains the L7A1 stabilized 105-mm gun assisted by updated FCS equipment. It can fire a variety of NATO ammunition, including APDS, HESH, HEAT-FS, APFSDS and others. Like the Chieftain Mk.5, it has 2 7.62 machine guns, one mounted at co-axial and the other on the roof. A 12.7mm ranging gun is also included despite already having a laser rangefinder.

Crew 4
Weight 36.1 unloaded, 38.7t combat load
Engine Detroit Diesel 12V-71T V12 diesel, 720 hp at 2.500 rpm
Power ratio 18.6 hp/t
Top Speed 60 km/h
Armor Cast steel and RHA
Armament 105mm L7 cannon, stabilized
7.62mm coaxial MG12.7mm ranging MG7.62mm roof MG
Gun handling -7 to +20° elevation, powered, 360° traverse, 24°/s powered
Main ammo All NATO ammo for 105mm L7A1, 50 rounds with 18 ready to fire
Smoke 2×6 smoke grenade launchers

I think this tank can be added to British BR 7.7-9.0 depending on the ammo it receives. Its performance would resemble other NATO MBTs of the era such as Leopard 1, Type 74 and OF-40 more than the existing tanks in the British tree, prioritizing mobility over armor protection. Although no credible source is available for ammo selection, I believe it used L52/M728 series APDS early in its life and possibly L64 APFSDS towards the 1990s.

It is the fast MBT that British tree needs at upper tier. As British tree has no MBT between 7.0 and 8.3, I think the Vickers Mk.3 can fill in at:

  • BR 7.3 or 7.7 with APDS and HESH. It is a slower and slightly less armored Leopard 1 with stabilzer.
  • BR 8.0 with if it also gets HEAT-FS.
  • As Britain doesn't lack MBT as badly after 8.3, I think we should leave the APFSDS to the following tank.

Vickers developed the Mk.3(I) model in the late 1980s as a further upgrade to the Mk.3. Adding the capability to fit ERA, improved FCS and 900hp Condor CV 12 TCE engine. It was proposed to Malaisya but the deal was unsuccessful following the end of Cold War. Unlike the basic Mk.3, this tank has a brand new hull with improved protection that resembles a Chieftain hull externally. Unfortunately no composite armor is included either so protection would be pretty weak against other tanks of its era.

Crew 4
Weight 39.5t
Engine Condor CV 12 TCE diesel engine, 900 hp
Power ratio 22.8 hp/t
Top Speed 60 km/h
Armor Cast steel and RHA
Armament 105mm L7 cannon, stabilized
7.62mm coaxial MG12.7mm ranging MG7.62mm roof MG
Gun handling -7 to +20° elevation, powered
360° traverse, 24°/s powered
Main ammo

All NATO ammo for 105mm L7A1, 50 rounds with 18 ready to fire  | |Smoke|2×6 smoke grenade launchers|

The Vickers Mk.3(I) would be a lovely addition for British top tier. Its light armor is now even more meaningless, but the increase in mobility and possession of a powerful APFSDS makes it a tank hunter like the Leopard A1A1 L/44.

  • BR 9.0 with L64 APFSDS.
