Seems like most of reddit is talking about Scarlet Spear from the ground mission perspective. I've mostly been doing the space portion. So here's how I see it from my perspective: it's not good.
The vast majority of your time on the space side are spent waiting for ground teams to send kill codes while sentient enemies slowly whittle down your unhealable oplink things. When ground teams are going great, this process flies and it feels awesome. When ground teams are not going great, the process slows to a crawl and you risk losing unless you cheese the game with limbo. And from my experience, so far, the ground teams are sending kill codes slowly.
Sometimes in the flotilla, you'll see far more ground squads than space squads and you can watch the feed to see if codes are coming in at a decent pace, but you have no idea what will change once you start the mission. On the space squad, you have no control over how the ground squads are doing. You have no way to assist the ground teams. You have no way to see what's holding up the process. All you can do is hope your oplinks don't get poked to death while the kill codes trickle in at 5+ minutes between each code.
When the ground squads are working well, it's actually pretty fun. It's not ground breaking or super novel, it's just fun because playing this game is simply a pleasure. That's what I don't get about all this new content. You've got a game that is simply a pleasure to play. You don't have to make stuff so massively convoluted. Just provide some standard ol' challenging missions with replayable-worth rewards (ie. not one time drops like weapons or mods, but instead some kind of resource that is always valuable), and I'll be perfectly happy because the combat system is just fun to play.
EDIT: just a quick after thought. You know, when squad link was first announced, I thought it meant there would be squads and a link between them. Like there's Squad A and Squad B, and they'd be linked. Two separate squads in separate areas, but helping each other out. In context of this event Squad A goes enters a murex and places down their oplinks. They're now linked with Squad B who is on the ground getting kill codes. Chat opens up so they can communicate and coordinate their objectives.
Of course, this might get messy if B wants to leave before A or something. Maybe it would be better for one objective missions instead of endless missions. But that's just how I imagined squad link working.
