Discussion – Would Shadows over Bogenhafen be more well-received had it been an “optional/support the devs” release as opposed to a “DLC?”

I've been covering the game and community for some time and, naturally, I noticed that there was a lot of disappointment with Shadows over Bogenhafen.

Personally, I wasn't too crestfallen by it but that's mostly because of regional pricing difference — it's $4 where I live by the way. I also noticed how the new maps are well-designed and are available via Quickplay. The cosmetics — I don't really need to collect all of them, and they all seem like optional additions. Nothing that would be game-breaking, game-changing, or have anyone who did not buy the DLC get left behind.

Everything was very lenient and optional.

But even though the pricing was OK from where I'm standing at and the business model seems very lenient, I also have to recognize that many in the player base want more content and more stuff to do.

Since gamers already have an idea of "what a DLC should be (in any game in general)" — Shadows over Bogenhafen did not meet these expectations since everything seemed so "optional" and "not too game-changing."

Do you guys think that Shadows over Bogenhafen becoming a simple "Cosmetic Pack" or a purely "your choice if you want to support developers" type of transaction be more well-received than as a DLC?

ie. "We're releasing the two Shadows over Bogenhafen maps for free. We also have a cosmetic pack that allows you to obtain new hats and weapon skins — for $9.99. The cosmetic pack is completely optional and it's only if you want to continue supporting the company."

For reference, many games have "Collector's Editions" or "Mini Packs" that cost around (or more) than $9.99 and these are merely to support devs, nothing more, nothing less.

In a way, you don't expect anything besides just wanting to provide support — as opposed to a DLC where you expect something "bigger" or "more" considering the wait for new content.
