Today I tried the axe and shield combo for the first time as an Ironbreaker on Veteran and I enjoy it far more than 2h hammer. I love the near-infinite stamina, I find it way easier to land charged attack when and how I want to, I instinctivelly block a lot more. I feel all around less clumsy and more protected than I did with 2h hammer. And my damage output doesn't seem to have suffered. Axe and shield + pistols seems like a loadout I want to stick with (I won't have a lot of time to play, but I want to max out a career, so I'm aiming to master one playstyle as quickly as I can).
Now my question specifically is this: how much will this supposedly sub-optimal loadout handicap me on champion and legend? Am I developing bad habits I will need to drop if I want to get anywhere on those difficulties or is the difference between the various weapons' performance really marginal compared to an individual person's preference for them? Are there any top shelf legend players who use axe and shield or is that borderline impossible?
Also, in the unlikely case that I'll change my mind about my preferred career, are there any weapons in other classes that stright-up don't work on higher difficulties?
Thanks in advance for your answers.
